I really like your one-shot and the idea that Alex was that serious ever. So he didn't know it any other way and doesn't miss his old life to much.
In my opinion this is really great and interesting written. Well done

I think it gives a good picture of Alex's childhood. It's also incredibly sweet - love how you characterized everyone, and how you described their relatioships with each other ;)

Awww this is super cute! I really like the little details you added, like Ian being Alex's father's brother rather than his uncle (was this Ian trying to keep his distance? remind Alex that his isn't his father? maybe he doesn't feel like he deserves a proper family title?) and then Jack immediately making herself at home and Alex shaking her hand and just generally acting way too mature for his age... Also the part about "being challenged to talk to someone in the market in Polish and give them a letter" was so cute, I could totally imagine little 6 year old Alex being all weirded out but going along with it because Ian plays it off... Helen's wedding ring was a nice touch too. I kind of wanted more of this!

Also on a mostly unrelated side-note - this story kind of reminded me of a fic I read aaages ago and tried to track down again but couldn't find. It was a pretty long one and well-written too from what I can remember, set before the books and beginning when Jack comes to join them. Alex is quite little in it and as the story progresses there's some Jack/Ian, but Jack doesn't know the truth about Ian. The best thing I can remember is there's a scene when they get caught in a bank robbery and Ian kicks some serious ass. Does this ring a bell at all? your story has kinda made me wanna dig it up and read it!

The only Ian Rider fics I love are the ones where he's accidentally an awful care giver but then he clumsily tries to fix things, and you nailed it! Brilliant fic, I know who I'm voting for in the polls this week!
