Reviews for The Roar
Brazilian weeb chapter 10 . 4/9
This work is a fantastic piece of writing. The characters are woven into the timeline absolutely perfectly as immigrants escaping political turmoil in Europe and stay true to their personalities in the anime franchise. The plot is interesting and clear to understand, and the environment you portray feels incredibly realistic and detailed. It reminded me a bit of my native California, despite being across the nation. On top of that, my favorite aspect of this work would have to be the history interwoven into the story. Being an American, I appreciate the setting in America and enjoy the details about the Prohibition era, the economy crash, immigrant workers from post-war Europe, and the elaboration around the Japanese in America. I think the best part of this fic is the way you seamlessly portray the characters as just ordinary immigrant folks caught up in a particularly rough time in history, both economically and politically. Though I get that it’s been a while since this fic has been updated, I believe this work is an exceptional piece of fan-made historical fiction and hopefully I’ll see you again continuing this after you finish your Naruto piece. Thanks for writing us such a great story and of course, take care
sk chapter 10 . 5/19/2019
WOW! Can't wait for the next chapter and I want more pruhun! Will you still update this series?
Ole reader chapter 10 . 11/23/2018
Well seeing that the last time you updated this it was still spring (well in the US of course), I feel that I should do some over bites stuff of the first ten chapters of the story! As always, my little blurbs are so random and very unorganized so I tried to give them little bullet points.
- Black Amelia is a fantastic character and I hope we get to see her in the story!
- With the whole Kiku party dealing with Ludwig, Feliciano and Antonio, I want to see where it leads to. Will it allude to the actions of ww2, or is this just a red herring?
- Adding onto the previous bullet point (we’ll dash but oh well) is this is actually an allusion to ww2, how will you manage to incorporate the allies into this AU of New York?
- Love the diversity of all sorts, which is sort of New York Cities core: all the immigrants and the struggles they deal with. Your references to the black population really makes up for what the heralds cast lacks, and I love the introduction of Kiku into the Asian aspect of this as well. The reference to the Native American in the most current chapter also adds another layer of the amount of culture the State has, even though we know the place is mostly full of white Americans. As in the musical Hamilton, “Immigrants, we get the job done”.
-Speaking of diversity, even though New York City is the main setting, the little expositions Gilbert makes into the north New York woods is a lovely change of scenery for the reader.
- I should’ve mentioned this above with the whole Kiku situation, but I adore the amount of mystery in this story.
-One chapter references a New York as a concrete jungle. Would that be your own description of it, or perhaps a reference to Sinclair’s “The Jungle” that is written about Chicago around this time? Maybe I’m stretching it, but I love the description of New York as a concrete jungle.
- Bootlegging and the Great Depression hoovering over New York and effecting our main characters (specifically the Natalya and Elizabeta)
-One chapter mentioned Ludwig’s knowledge for language and Gilbert’s knowledge for culture, YES! They are the perfect team.
- Also Natalya’s love for communism is strong and true, to the point where she would rather ditch her rich brother and live with Elizabeta and Lili instead. I do like that you have her character the depth she deserves.
- The cast of FotV is in this story... and more! So far it seems that Felicks won’t take that big of a role, but I love to see that the same writer can use the same characters in a different AU and write it so well. Good job!
- Gilbird. Reading the little interactions between Gilbird and Ludwig tell me that you know stuff about birds. Especially the little part about the bird climbing with his (her?) two legs and the beak! You cleverly inputted such a side hetalia character into your story and I love it! If I read deeper into your story like i would in English class (it goes too deep sometimes) Gilbert’s could probably represent something... I just don’t know what.
- Alfred as a police officer (hero) is such a good character.
Alright that’s all I have for now.
Thank you for writing what you have already, and keep writing for the chapters to come. I can’t wait to see what happens next. I’ll be reviewing the next time. Hope my reviews have motivated/helped you on your story!
Write to you later.

Ole reader chapter 8 . 11/22/2018
Ok read this chapter. I’m blown away!
I think his is the first chapter that I don’t recognize, so this is a new experience for me! A fresh new review and my first impressions I suppose.
1. Introduction of Felicks is well done! And the fight between Gilbert and Felicks is sort of a forshadowing to 1939.
2. Amelia being a black woman bootlegger, essentially the oppoisite of Alfred! And also the inclusion of black people in this story is more realistic and gives another portion of NYC’s diversity. Love that you also wrote her dialogue in vernacular.
3. Introduction of Feliciano and Antonio with Kiku and Ludwig! Just love the references you make to the coming events. And loved the irony at the end of Ludwig’s POV (that there’s definitely no spies here!)
4. Great Depression effects. Elizabeta and Natalya losing their jobs, and poor enough to kill the pigeons that visit their window sill (irony actually again, since Gilbert — the less merciful one in general — saved gilbird off the streets.
Yeah alrighty. Going to keep reading.
If I didn’t already write this: Happy thanksgiving! (Or you can get it two times hooray!)
Ole reader chapter 7 . 11/22/2018
This chapter is really intriguing! Firstly, the introduction of Lili to Ludwig and Kiku to Gilbert. Now the lives of Ludwig and Gilbert are more intertwined simply because of the introduction of the two people. Gilbert knows Lili and now Ludwig might get pulled into Elizaveta and Natalya’s situation (probably to the dismay of Gilbert haha but I’ll see...) and Gilbert gets pulled into kiku’s situation.
I also (always) love the cultural comparisons! This time not only is German culture contrasted with American culture (at the school Lili goes to) but there’s also Japanese culture being compared!
There’s also a pretty witty Gilbert in this chapter; noticing that Kiku is a spy with the questions about American boats, the forshadowing of the tension between Germans and Americans at the very end of this chapter. Etc.
Your little authors note convinced me to write this. I hope my writing convinced you to continue with this story. Now I’m going to keep reading. Have a nice thanksgiving.
Ole reader chapter 2 . 11/21/2018
Perhaps phrased something like this:
“Tch. Those simple brutes. Der, das, and die are all simplified into only one word: the.”

(Of course I googled the German, so it’s probably not correct sorry about that.)
The whole entire sentence is said in German until Gilbert points out the word “the”. And also the reader is like, wow there are the words for “the” in German and they come out like that.

Yeah sorry for the long extended review about such a simple sentence. Hope I helped!
-Ole reader
Ps: sorry for sending reviews that come in halves, I’m writing on mobile and my big fat thumbs keep hitting the post review button. On a positive note, you’ll get more reviews now! And they’re not as lengthy as they could’ve been. Alright I’m going back to reading
Ole Reader chapter 2 . 11/21/2018
Hello hello! It seems that my reviews come in pairs for some reason.
As an author of a story, I’m pretty sure that you’d love some constructive criticism on your work. Now, your plot and characters and basically the entirety of the story is wonderfully written! I just have a tiny minuscule little detail I want to pick on. (Frankly because I can’t find any other flaws in your piece. But constructive criticism is always helpful for the writers I know personally, so I will give you a little tip.)
In this chapter that I’m reviewing on there’s this quote that Gilbert says to Ludwig when talking about English:

"Tsch. Yeah, apparently these simple brutes don't have three different words for the."

I see that you’re trying to integrate the cultural differences between American and German people, and yes this is pretty funny! But actually doesn’t really make sense in my mind. Most reader would be confused by this statement and need to search it up to understand it. From what I know, you know some German (abroad in the country or something?) so you’d understand the reference of the different words for “the”. But because you’re writing in english, the only word that shows up on our screens is the word “the”... yes we know Gilbert is speaking German. But would it be better to clarify what he means?
“These simple brutes
Ole reader chapter 4 . 11/21/2018
Hello again.
Read all the way up to chapter 4! I still remember it vaguely from the good old days. Love your use of bringing a wide range of characters from Hetalia into your fic! We’ve already got Gilbert, Ludwig, Alfred, Elizaveta, Natalya, Lili, and Ivan. Not only do you add a big cast of people, you integrate them well into your story. Sometimes so many characters can become too much for the story and it’s easy to stray to far off from the main story. So far you’ve created a pretty realistic 1920’s New York as well. As I said before, the integration of historical facts and culture of New York city is written impeccably. There’s historical factoids in here that I’m learning about New York that is brought into this story (of course I only know a little bit, but not too much of the gangs, the illegal bars, the immigrants struggle etc) and I’m slurping it up. The little details of American vs other countries culture is also cleverly inserted in the Roar (Ludwig’s weight being in kilos, the gun Elizabeth brought out, I belive later on in the story a little tangent about pronouncing the word “squirrel”).
Anyways, I know it’s hard to balance college, grad school, whatever your going through right now, with fan fiction. This is a truly amazing story with amazing potential and I hope you still have the passion and motivation to continue creating the world of New York City with hetalia characters. Good luck and have fun!

Ole reader chapter 1 . 11/18/2018
Let me clarify what I meant before haha
I wrote Gilbert instead of Ludwig for the review, sorry about the mix up haha
Ole reader chapter 1 . 11/18/2018
Hi Celticfeather
Ole reader here. I read this fic back in 2015-16 ish, but it’s been so long so I’ve come back as a little refresher. Love the language and culture barrier between Alfred and Gilbert in the beginning, it’s realistic: the attitudes of the characters and the colloquial slang Alfred uses. Brilliant writing with Gilbert’s slip of tongue while asking Alfred for a drink. Also badass Eliza is fricken great, the power play between Gilbert and Eliza builds up the tension. Not only that, the little slips about Americans and our ignorance about the world — haha that cracked me up.
Everything looks really good! The nations fit into their role so as normal human beings so well. I’ll have fun reading the rest of this doc so far
mia kiruna chapter 10 . 3/19/2018
Gosh, i adore your take on pruhun it's just feels so right with how i see their relationship! Not like their characters clash in most other people's fics, but here they seem to have this deep understanding of each other- they are of the same material at their core kind of thing.
So there will be liz-gil-matt meeting in the future, i think it will be really interesting...
Guest chapter 10 . 3/19/2018
It seems that if you're seeking Eliza's attention, treating her with ice cream is your best shot~(I adore imagining her enjoying her ice cream) :D BTW, the ending of Ch. 10 is so awesome!
Fandomfan46 chapter 10 . 3/18/2018
WOW!? Interesting ending *wink* Oh GOSH, THE SCENES! THE PURPLE GLASSES WEARING EUROPEAN WITH LIZ, PRUHUN, GILBIRD, HUNTING, THE NATIVE BOY and most inportantly, YOU'RE BACK!? Ahh I was offline for a bit, being away with friends but I came back to an update- and the first of the new year! I nearly jumped out of joy! I love it! Roderich's meeting was phenomenal, a very pleasant surprise, and probably one of my favorite introduction in the story. Then, the sweet sweet development of pruhun, the subtle seduction, to the hilarity of the not-so-subtle bribery to get Ludwig to scram. HA it was wonderful! The friendships between man and avian or man to man, the gangster practices of bootlegging and how they work for a woman and the facts you've weaved in again. Brilliant! I'm grateful you wrote this for us, and I can't wait to see what happens next! Take the time necessary and we'll be waiting! Thank you, Ceticfeather!
JYLeetf1223 chapter 10 . 3/17/2018
Yay! It has been updated! Thank you!
Also Gil’s english has improved so much, I’m surprised. Luddy must have taught him well
Guest chapter 10 . 3/17/2018
YeSS! Long wait but well worth it. I'm seeing the PruHun is getting some developments ( ͡ ͜ʖ ͡)
