I have to say, this is one of the most enjoyable Niles/CC fictions I've ever read! You kept the integrity of both characters in your writing, which is incredibly difficult to do with these two because of their complexity and multiple layers. I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS FIC IS OVER. I will miss it so much (except for Molly. She can die in a fire for all I care.) I’m so lucky that you’ve spoiled me as of late with all your fics. Locus, this, Double Date, Just a Dream…how did I get so lucky? “I really should find a way to repay you…but I won’t. It’s just not who I am.” – CC Babcock but also me.

“Years would pass, decades and centuries and eons, and Niles doubted anyone in the world would achieve more happiness than he currently felt, holding hands on a park bench with CC Babcock.” Stick a fork in me and serve me with a side of garlic mashed potatoes because I AM WELL DONE.

“Balanced against years of hints, despair, hopelessness, and fights…well, it was no contest. This moment was worth it.” This basically sums them up on the show too. All of it was worth it. Maybe even season 5. Maybe. Idk. But I mean all the drama with them at the end of Season 6 was worth it because look how happy they are in the delivery room when the doctor comes in and violates HIPAA. Look at how they’re looking at each other. It was all worth it for that.

“But today had been a little different, as CC had shed light on some rather important details he'd been selectively muting: he'd never actually tried. Not in any explicit way, not in any way he knew she needed.” This is so accurate, for this story AND season 6. Remind me again why CC is continuously seen as the bad guy at the end of season 6 when Niles makes 0 effort to let her know how he feels.

“wondering how he could have wasted such a spectacular amount of time wanting CC and never managing to do a damn thing about it.” I hope the Niles on the show is as self aware as this Niles. I love this Niles.

“It would have been one of the more outstanding failures in history, surely.” Clearly this Niles never saw the Chatterbox episode of The Nanny, because then he’d know even worse outstanding failures.

“(like Aphrodite plucked from the clouds) “ I will miss the poetic similes. Can you teach me your ways?

“No, it seemed that the pattern of their interactions held no matter what: hot anger and irritation followed by near-immediate forgiveness. They never stayed mad for too long.” This is honestly my favorite part about their relationship. Even after such a serious blow up like they had at her apartment, they still fall back into their normal routine. It’s the best.

“At some point in the conversation, he realized that he was an idiot for ever thinking that all hope was lost” Oh, Niles. That’s not why you’re an idiot.

“he felt a profound desire to be with her as she completed all of those things” I have a profound desire to witness all this. Why didn’t the show give us any of this?

“Then she allowed him to hold her hand, he felt her skin against his, and he wanted to do 80 different things with her, all of which would get him arrested if he tried any right now in the middle of Central Park.” Well, this makes a hell of a lot more sense than fucking Walmart, that’s for sure. I’m here for Central Park sex. 100 percent.

“As she answered, her thumb absentmindedly traced little circles against the back of his hand and he wondered how long he'd been in love with her.” DON’T TOUCH ME. I can’t even explain why I love this so much. I love that she’s absentmindedly tracing little circles on the back of his hand. That’s so…coupley? And they haven’t even really sorted out their relationship just yet and she’s already there. IDK. It made sense in my head. And then him wondering how long he’d been in love with her god dammit I love them so much.

"What about you? What do you do on your days off?" CC asked him.
"I sit on park benches and wait for you to walk by," he answered.

“He'd just decided he wanted to kiss her—with the sun in her hair and the smile on her face, she proved too irresistible—but before he could, CC took a step towards him and nestled her lips around his. It was a light but steady touch, lingering long enough to set Niles's heart rate to "cardio."” KILL ME DEAD. I LOVE THE SET UP OF THIS SO MUCH. GO ‘HEAD, CC. GET YOURS.

“She reached over and scooped Chester into her arms, sidestepping Niles with a smug face. He snapped to attention a few moments later, hurrying after her and sliding his arm around her waist.” Did you ever notice that CC and Niles’ relationship is a lot like CC and Chester’s? She pretends to hate him, he pretends to hate her, but she can count on him to follow her anywhere? I took a muscle relaxer for my back.

“From behind the front desk, Niles spied John raising his eyebrows and smirking slightly.” Me, too, John. Me too. Let’s co-write a fic of all the minor characters featured in our fics discussing Niles and CC. I miss Bryant.

“CC returned to the lobby with a handbag nestled in the crook of her elbow and a happy smile on her face. Niles returned it to her, leaning over and pressing a kiss to her jaw.” SET ME ON FIRE AND SCATTER MY ASHES IN THE FIREPLACE IN THE SHEFFIELD’S LIVING ROOM WHERE NILES AND CC DANCED TO OUR LOVE IS HERE TO STAY BY THE FIRE. THEY’RE SUCH A COUPLE IT MAKES ME ACHE.

"You're an idiot, Niles," she replied, grabbing his hand again as they walked in unison.
"Yes, probably," Niles agreed. "I did choose you, after all."
I DON’T HAVE A CHOICE BUT I STILL CHOOSE YOUUUUUU HAHAH HA HA HA THIS IS MY BREAKDOWN. No but for real I love the fact that she calls him an idiot while grabbing his hand. That’s what I envision their marriage like.

"Would it help at all if I told you I missed you?” yes, Niles. It would help me.

"Don't worry, I figured I'd need to with your brain, addled as it's been by age and liquor," Niles replied, patting their linked hands in a placating manner. "Where should we e—" CC began. Niles cut her off as he turned suddenly, turning her to face him with his free hand. He kissed her fully and excitedly, not caring when people jostled them on either side and huffed under their breath about people taking up the sidewalk.

It kind of was easy once they got their shit together and that’s what I love about them. They’re dumb idiots 99% of the time but then that 1% happens and they click and it’s easy. Sigh. Also don’t even get me started on her laughing and pressing her nose against his because I will jump through my window and roll around in broken glass in the driveway and the neighbors will talk.

Alright 1. Everyone follows CC around like a puppy. Chester, Niles, Fran, Maxwell probably because he’s dumb and needs CC’s guidance in the business always.

Psst, the story still isn't marked "complete". I think there's a box to check or something? Otherwise, you're just teasing us by giving us hope you're going to keep adding to it ...

I re-read chapter 11 before continuing to 12, and I like their conversation with the back and forth questions even more than I did on the first read. Very nicely done. I can see why it would work to end things there, though I do like the addition of the dialogue portion of this final chapter. In general, the length and intensity of the happy ending should match the length and intensity of the conflict, so 1.5 chapters of resolution feels about right for a 12 chapter story that was relatively low angst. :)

All in all, this has been a very enjoyable story. Well done, J, and I can't wait to see what "other ideas" are eager to get out! :)

You're free to dislike this ending, if you wish so, but I loved it. Niles' line about what he does in his days off, the fact she kissed him first and called him spineless, and then touched him just to prove he was 'easy' to her had me smiling.

Jealous CC is just my absolute favorite plot line and of course your take on it exceeded expectations.

I love the end of this how they literally have to negotiate taking turns revealing bits of information since just having a normal conversation about their actual feelings after all these years would be too scary.

Also love how CC learns about Molly and her mind immediately goes into worst-case-scenario mode (a possible marriage) so she comes up with the Molly Maid joke.

I think my favorite part was Molly coming over for dinner and CC "practically marking her territory" all over Niles (maybe my favorite line as well, which is really impressive since it's not even said by Niles or CC, who have great banter throughout the fic). But really just everything about the dinner, even the little things like Fran directing Molly to sit next to her so that CC wouldn't have to be right next to her (and to force niles and cc to sit next to each other) was perfection.

And CC's coughing reaction to Niles' "love" comment kind of goes to how I imagine CC in this predicament- just being physically unable to accept this new situation no matter how hard she tries to contain her inner turmoil.

Oh and I LOVED the s'mores moment, how close they came to kissing and then Molly walked in ahh! And CC protecting herself by walking out without looking back at the 2 of them in the kitchen, the angst. I'm sure i've told you before that you're the queen of angst but really the subtle way in which you portray it just makes it that much more heartbreaking. so congrats on literally breaking my heart with your writing haha.

I also loved the Fran and Max moments in here, particularly Fran giving her input after Niles asks for her opinion on Molly's ultimatum, and then Max trying to reassure CC at the theater that it would all work out. Great dialogue and in-character for both of them.

CC using the word "ridiculous" twice to describe Molly's demand that Niles not see CC anymore, and then having trouble giving details as to exactly why it's ridiculous as Niles once again puts her on the spot was great.

CC and Fran's drunken conversation where they talked (and refused to talk) about Niles was probably better than any conversation they actually had on the show, hilarious and honest.

And then CC admitting she missed him, sigh. Perfect. Oh wait I did also particularly love CC saying that she would have "given some better orders" if she knew Niles would listen, so that might be my other favorite line.

Niles at CC's building trying to get CC to admit she was jealous without giving her any kind of hints as to his own feelings, HA good luck with that Niles. But then he said he was waiting for her and I forgave him.

Just a great, great job. I mean it's kind of hard to make me dislike a jealous CC story but this is a top tier fic in that category (according to my completely objective ranking system) so really just thank you. :)

"What do you do in your spare time?" he asked.
The question so surprised CC that she spun her head to look at him and couldn't think of a thing to say in response. But he looked at her with such genuine interest and not a hint of malice that she softened towards him. "I…well." CC paused, stumped as she usually became when someone asked about her hobbies.

This one is a two-fer. 1. Remember when you asked me what I thought CC did in her spare time? Well this part is now my official canon for what she does in her spare time. I'm glad you included this in there. 2. CC being surprised at how genuine he is being and stumped for what to say is kind of heartbreaking. nO ONE IN HER LIFE CARES ABOUT HER THE WAY SHE SHOULD BE CARED FOR.

"I usually read scripts to get a head start on Maxwell so I can talk him out of whatever terrible idea he comes up with next." I laughed out loud at this. Maxwell is so dumb and CC is responsible for all the success their company has.

"May I hold your hand?" BYE NOPE DON'T TOUCH ME DONT LOOK AT ME DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT ME IM DESTROYED BY THIS. AFTER EVERYTHING THEY'VE BEEN THROUGH, AFTER EVERYTHING, HE JUST SIMPLE ASKS TO HOLD HER HAND. AND SHE AGREES. NO MORE RIDDLES, NO MORE DEMANDS. The man prevented her ability to form coherent mental sentences." this reminds me of when Henry Higgins is so frustrated by his feelings for Eliza Doolittle that he just goes "Damn, damn, damn, damn." Apparently my favorite thing ever is to compare CC and Niles to Henry and Eliza.

"First, he showed up reminding her of the embarrassing things she'd said while drunk. Wasn't there a social code prohibiting that?" YES. YES THERE IS A CODE. I'M WITH YOU THERE, CC. I AM WITH YOU.

"Then, he had the nerve—the goddamn nerve—to suggest that she ruined things for him? Oh ho ho, oh ho ho, Butler Boy didn't stand a chance after that. CC had finally let loose all the things he'd deserved to hear since he first started moping around the mansion in his robe with his pints of ice cream. She watched as her words dismantled the pedestal he'd concocted for himself out of self-pity and a false notion of victimhood." I love the "Oh ho ho"'s - that's such a CC thing, I wanna steal it and use it in real life. I love this whole thing so much. I hope in Dummy Twins she was as angry as this CC is. Niles moping around and playing the victim deserves way more anger than from just the two of us.

"Normally, she didn't deploy such tactics against the butler; out of a strange sense of loyalty, CC never wanted to actually tear him down the way choreographers and lighting contractors deserved." I love this too. This goes with my headcanon that no one else is allowed to mess with them besides each other. If Niles ever caught someone talking about CC he'd defend his woman. If CC ever saw anyone messing with Niles she'd unleash hell on them. They're strangely protective of each other which is funny when you consider their relationship.

"Because then he'd made his sad eyes and reminded her that he'd asked her" the sad eyes. Bye.

"He should have laughed in that silly woman's face at the idea that he'd stop talking to someone he'd known for fifteen years." Hell yes, he should've. And it's not even just the 15 years, it's the fact that it's CC.

"Still, CC congratulated herself for not knocking the butler out cold by that point." I laughed out loud at this. I, too, congratulate myself when I don't knock people out who deserve it.

"And the Oxford-educated butler (his entire life, CC decided, was an oxymoron)" f*cking brilliant. Absolutely f*cking brilliant.

"The idea that Niles had tried was pathetic. If he truly thought anything he'd ever done towards or around CC could qualify as trying, then he really did need to just marry the caterer because it was unlikely he'd ever get any woman ever again." IDK what I can do to top the banner parade idea I had with the last chapter. I guess I could have Obama sign this part and declare it a law. It is now law that Niles never tries ever in any situation when it comes to CC.

"Didn't he know, didn't he understand that she needed more than an olive branch wrapped in hints and teases? How had he been in her life for fifteen years and still didn't know her well enough to know how she needed to be dealt with?" I'm crying because Niles is so dumb.

"and thought that Niles was probably with Molly right now, eating brunch. She didn't know why she thought of brunch. It just seemed like something Molly would insist they do." Don't worry, CC. You're gonna meet a gay waiter named Bryant someday, and you, too, will know the joys of brunch. (Molly totally strikes me as a brunch person though.)

"Stop thinking about the butler!" lmao okay CC, let me know how that works out for you.

"There was no point in replying that she'd been expecting him to wait for her." *RIPS STILL BEATING HEART OUT OF CHEST AND THROWS IT IN THE GARBAGE WHERE IT BELONGS.* DON'T TOUCH ME, DON'T TALK TO ME, DON'T EVEN LOOK AT ME.

"(and there were quite a few drunk phone calls throughout the years that both parties politely pretended to have never happened)" Well, I need fic for this now.

"I'm sorry, my dog—" CC began, then stopped when she realized who it was. "—has bad taste." I LAUGHED OUT LOUD AT THIS IT'S SO BRILLIANT.

""All right, why are you sitting on a park bench by yourself like a sad old man?" CC suddenly demanded." I love her so much. No beating around the bush with that one.

"How many times, throughout the years, had she been fuming mad with him and then shared a laugh about something unrelated twenty minutes later? It's how they were." This is honestly my favorite thing about their relationship. I wish we got 400 more instances on the show if this actually happening, because it's totally how I picture them really interacting. But I guess Lauren Lane had a stipulation in her contract that she was only to receive 2 minutes of screentime per episode. That's the only explanation I can think of for why Val had more screentime than CC.

"Niles glanced over his shoulder at her, his eyes inscrutable. "Perhaps if I had a girlfriend, yes."" My stomach dropped to my ass at this part.

"CC resisted the urge to run across the reservoir to test if the lightness she currently felt meant she could float across water." "In her mind's eye, CC saw herself twirling on the water as though it were an ice rink." I loved the visual of this. HOW DO YOU EVEN THINK UP THIS SHIT IT'S SO GODDAMN GOOD.

"I just did."
"I hate when people respond like that. That wasn't my question. Why didn't you tell me before?" YO PREACH GURL. I HATE THAT TOO. I feel like I know why you included this. Is it because of your hatred for people who answer in ways that demand everyone else to ask for more details?

"Is your big butt glued to that seat or do you want to join us?" She's just the best person.

"I'll start getting testy."
"Start? When did you stop?" I love their love so much. Light me on fire.

"Why are you so annoying?" CC exclaimed, startling the passing joggers.
"Well, Miss Babcock, I believe it's because—" I MISSED THE GENTLE TEASING SO MUCH IM GONNA RIP MY FACE OFF.

"He rubbed his hands together eagerly and she felt a rush of gratitude for this man who knew her well enough to not demand a reply to what he'd just said." This is what kills me about Niles. He DOES know her well. He knew her well enough to know that what he just said would be very overwhelming for her. SO THEN WHY DID THE PROPOSALS HAPPEN? WH Y?! WHY GOD WHY?

"Maybe? I pour my heart out to you—"
"That explains the smell."
"—and you give me a maybe?" I love the set-up of this and I love CC's response and I love them so much I'm gonna jump into the reservoir CC was watching earlier.

"He has tiny legs so he gets tired," don't mind me I'm just emo about how much CC really loves Chester.

"Hey, you're the one who was mean to me earlier. I just thought you'd appreciate the chance to redeem yourself."
"You've been mean to me for fifteen years!" CC objected, stopping at the bench Niles had been on earlier and sitting down. Chester curled up to her left while Niles sat down to her right.
"Fair enough. One more question apiece." omg I died at the "you've been mean to me for fifteen years" part. I love that Niles doesn't even deny it. He says "fair enough."

"Because…" She trailed off and watched a bird skim its wings along the water. "Because I thought you were waiting for me." OKAY, I love the whole theme (? is that the right word? I'm not a fancy English person like you. I am but a simple nurse) of them waiting for each other. Niles was waiting for CC to notice him, CC was waiting for Niles to get his head out of his ass and do something about their relationship.

"Niles shrugged and his shoulder lightly kissed hers." when I first read this I read it as "Niles shrugged and lightly kissed her shoulder" and I was like "wow he moves fast" and then I reread it and realized he did not kiss her shoulder in the park in broad daylight as they were trying to sort out their relationship.

"I am…a horrible cad for agreeing to not see you and for avoiding Miss Fine."
"And for ignoring me for three months."
"And for ignoring you for three months," Niles agreed. "I loathed the idea of running to tell you that I was single and 'allowed' to see you again. I've deserved all of the terrible things you said about me."
I love this Niles so much. He's so smart and he knows he deserves everything he got and god why weren't we given more of this Niles on the show?! Also I love CC chiming in with "And for ignoring me for three months" she's so perfect.
