Why let them see the letter in the first place? It just seems so stupid of him, and the way he is reacts points to him not having done it to fuck with Vernon.

Why does he think someone will come for him on his birthday? Stuff like that just ruins the story cause the mc can't just know/conclude something without any sort of hints

His room is a cupboard so how can Vernon go into his room. Minor details make up most of any story and their important, so try to keep track of them. There have been many minor inconsistencies that just don't make sense.
