First of, Christmas and New Year, I can understand using the western calendar for the reader's convenience, but the idea that they celebrate Christmas is ridiculous, I highly doubt that there ever was a Jesus in the Avatar setting. If there was an equivalent, it was Wan the first avatar.

Second, I find it strange that writers would be pissed at ruining their character's lives. It's practically a writer's job description to do so. Make their characters face all kinds of difficulties. Ruining a few weeks is nothing, by comparison, JK Rowlings literally had a murderer/terrorist/lich hound a teenage boy for seven years.
