My latin is still very poor, and I struggled to understand a bit of it - so nice of you to put the translation below, btw. Anyway, I was thinking about what you said, that there's no word for photo in Latin, but if we think about it in the literally sense, we could just translate it from the Greek. I mean, photo light and graph writing, written; so it could be lumenscribi (written with light?) hahaha I know it's very forced and not right, but I liked it. I just decided to look up stories in Latin because I want to practice when I'm not in school for the summer and I was going to be reading fanfiction anyway... :) This is such a great idea, and you clearly study classical Latin - you have a great feel for what Romans would have said! Okay, I have comments if that's okay! I'm in my 3rd year in college (1 more until graduation!) and I've done Latin for 10 years now, but of course I still make loads of mistakes, so of course you don't have to take anything I say into account!

So my first comment is about Harry telling Colin about his parents. I think you should add a possessive word there like mihi or mei because at first I thought Harry meant Colin's parents. Also, the section with "precor" should be an indirect statement, not a subjunctive clause. These are confusing in English, but in Latin I think it makes a difference. You're saying "I pray that they will see you and recognize you," so you should write precor at the front and then follow with visuri esse and cognituri esse. You actually make the same mistake with spero ut voles. I think that also ought to be an indirect statement "spero te volere". Also in Harry's letter, you don't really mean habebit when you're talking about Dennis - also a common translation error because in English the word "will" means future tense and also subjunctive, and you've translated it into the future, but unless you're saying that Dennis will have a picture of Colin in the future (which is fine too!) you should use the subjunctive habeat to mean "should" have a picture of Colin. Does that make sense?

Then in Colin's letter you make the same indirect statement/subjunctive clause mistake with the phrase that begins te dicere. This should begin with a restatement of scrivo (or not - that's your call as author, but it should be there at least implied) and then a subjunctive clause "I write in order that you might know THAT (and this introduces an indirect statement with an infinitive) your words are false". Also, the phrase "cum volares" should be indicative rather than subjunctive because a cum when it relates to time (officially called temporal, but literally whenever cum means "when") takes the indicative mood, not the subjunctive.

And finally, the vocative of Harrius is Harrie if you assume that the noun Harrius is second declension with a -us ending. If you assume Harrius is irregular like "puer", you could just use Harrius as the vocative.

Anyway, I hope these comments were helpful and that you at least agree with one of them. I definitely would love to see more Latin work on this site - so keep it up! :)

This was pretty fantastic. It's been a while since I was at the height of my Latin knowledge, but even still I can tell you're a good stylist in Latin - lots of nice figures of speech in there. Clever to write in epistolary form - it feels much more Latinate and less weirdly anachronistic. 3rd person narration in Latin sounds really odd (I do own a copy of Harrius Potter and am speaking from this experience). I'd love to see other Latin epistolary fanfics from you if you think of them.

Afraid I can't spot grammar errors because it's simply been to long. Out of curiosity are you a classics major or just a high school student who's really good at Latin? Either way I'm impressed! (I'm the author of the Book 4 fanfic about Aeneas and Anna - thanks for the review :) )

Great story! I mostly ready the English because I don't have time and it's only my 2nd year of latin. I didn't realize that you could do latin as a language for this site now!
