This was written years before DMC5 came out. With DMC5 Vergil scales to Mundus who created a dimension full of stars, which the director has said was a universe. He also scales to Argosax who was causing the demon world to consume the human universe as stated in the guidebook to the game. He also scales to a low faster than light feat performed by Trish where she outruns Mundus's particle beam attack, and to a much higher faster than light feat performed by Mundus's meteors where they reach a planetoid that wasn't visible, and another one performed by Mundus and Dante where they flew across space, reaching some gas cloud that wasn't visible from where they started and leaving all the stars far behind them. He could also scale to the Fury, which is a basic lower level demon, which can travel through space-time, notably changing directions while doing so thus proving it's not just teleportation. Dante can react to it when it does this, so Vergil should be able to as well. That would imply reactions faster than linear time, or to put it more simply infinite speed. So yeah, with DMC5 Vergil now beats all versions of Superman except the ones with extra cosmic powers.

I don't hate Superman, and I gotta say I understood why he won, but I have a single question for Insieme. Why didn't Vergil have Beowolf? Those are magic gauntlets, and those have a chance of harming or killing Superman. Granted, he is nowhere near as fast or as strong as Superman, but with Beowolf and his Devil Trigger, he could at least close the gap.

I don't dislike Superman. I understand why many people do, but I personally like him, or at least if we're talking about the modern Superman.

Is it strange that superman winning just makes him even more unlikeable?

I'd like to add something to this conversation, I know it's old but eh why not.

Superman IS a god among men and there are some good ways to approach this story. Think about it like this, takes on superman like the Injustice Video Game for example are not that far fetched, some of Supermans best portrayals focus around the idea of fighting the urge to unleash his power on the populace, who could stop him? Most of the worth in this character is internal and from my experience that's both harder to do from a written aspect and harder to see from a reading aspect which is probably why most people don't like superman but enough do to keep him going.

Superman can sometimes be that arrogant, but he isn't usually like that. He does tend to act as if he alone carries everyone's hopes which is a bit off, but all things considered he's actually fairly modest at least on the surface. One thing the Death Battle got horribly wrong was when Superman taunted Goku by saying he's impressed he actually felt the hit. Superman is actually very bothered when he feels a hit because it proves this person he's dealing with could easily kill anyone else. He does however tend to feel superior under the surface. He is used to his power getting him through his problems and thus has resulted in his butt getting handed to him on several occasions.

You aren't wrong. I don't know if I'd say boring since that's a matter of opinion but I did run Superman's details through the Mary Sue Litmus Test and he scored higher than most to put it mildly. He outscored almost everyone I tested. All but one. The higher the score the more likely to be a Mary Sue.
