Such a good chapter! I'm completely torn! Bilbo's meant to be the mine of all correct opinions and common sense - it's overriding my instincts to say that Fili is right! But I don't believe any of them have it completely right yet, even Kili, because by their definition of free, I'm certainly not. Having other people make decisions for me is so much easier :P though I suppose I make the important ones myself. But it's strange doing it this way round - kids like to think that they can make all their own decisions and have to learn to follow instructions and Kili is the complete opposite, but what I hope for most is that Kili learns to be himself, like not how he was before, but to find what makes him happy and pursue it :)

Must be so very frustrating to all three.

Ah, poor Bilbo, he certainly didn't expect that. Neither did I! But of course Fili is right, Kili made a choice and they have to respect that.

I loved Kili getting defensive when he thought Bilbo called him weak. This chapter really pulled on my heart strings, trying to convince Kili he was important and him denying it. Brilliant as always!

Wow, that was more complicated than anticipated! But I'm glad that Kili understands himself a little better now - or knows himself and in time will understand as well. Wow. Awesome.

he's getting there.

The unexpected twists and turns within the story (and inside Kili's mind) make it really intriguing. Also, your writing is very natural while reflecting the slightly formal style of Tolkien. I don't know how you do that, but it's an enviable skill!

It is so amazing how drastically the orcs could warp Kili's mind and how difficult it must be for Fili and Bilbo to try to correct all the misconceptions.
