Yup, keeping the differences to Canon in mind, this was wholey deserved. Those letters, as redundant as some of the phrasing could be, was 100%vindictivey satisfying

Yeah, definitely getting the impression this is engineered to give Hiccup less reason to want to stay in Berk than in Canon - which is already very little givem how ready he was to leavt before the exam!

Having recently watched the Dragon Prince I am now imagining Toothless voice to be the same as Araavos/the narrator in the opening scene, its, like, the only voice I can imagine deeper than Stoics XD

As much as it interests me to see things being affected by the different mindset about Hiccups dragon killing potential, I don't think it will ever sit right with me to see Stoic do something like threaten something as precious as the last thing Hiccup has of his mother. Like, I know we saw him be harsh but only ever in an oblivious way where he honestly doesn't realise how hurtful it is bc he assumes Hiccup feels the same way, or after the revelation in the final exam where it was based off of something Hiccup had done that had been perceived as betraying the village in every way possible - and STILL we saw him reel from the weight of his own words as soon as he was out of sight. I've just... Never gotten the impression he didn't love his son, just that there was major relationship and communication issues escalating in the dire circumstances and the pressure of Stoic being Chief and Hiccup as unconventional as he is. This goes beyond bad parenting, its the actions of a bad PERSON, even if up until now he's seemed fine.
That's why, altered history due to the birthmark or not, this feels out of character for the Stoic I know and love, in a way that makes it difficult to reconcile the 2 presentations. I kind of remember from my previous time reading being on edge for any other signs of this sort of cruelty rising to the surface but as far as I got it never did and I started wondering if I was meant to, like, still basically feel the same about him going through this stuff, such as losing Hiccup in the way he did, as I would about Canon Stoic going through that. Aka much less not trusting him to be a good person and waiting for the other shoe to drop as a result.

Omigosh I remember coming across this story YEARS ago and never being able to remember the name to find it again later once I'd finally made an ff. Net account! I CANNOT BELIEVE I FINALLY FOUND IT AGAIN! from how far if gotten back then I know that I LOVE the totally different direction you take the story, even if I love Canon enough this story is kind of considered an entirely separate entity so that I can enjoy both in all the different things that make them special

After what happened to the girls, I don't think Hiccup would leave Savas and Fishlegs, and I also wouldn't be surprised if Viggo is an ally eventually, but that would be gradual.

Ok, im going to be blunt. The story needs to be reworked one day. The prophecy is too open, and isn't as mysterious as one would hope. Its also made obvious, which isn't the right style for a prophecy. One good example is the prophecy in the Wings Of Fire book series. Valka wouldn't hide from her son either, she would have explained instantly that she was his mother. And if anything, Fishlegs would be a nice addition to the group, even if he doesn't bear a dragon mark. Other than that, so far the storyline itself is quite interesting. I'll likely post up another review for a chapter further on if I notice something else.
