I really like this so far. I like how your making the circumstances that lead to him leaving seem more realistic. Some stories have the charecters act really oc to fit there plot and that's all good but it mess's with the quality of it in my opinion. But I think your doing a great job with it. The charecters are changed just right that they are still like they are from the movie so that the outcome is more believable and things don't seem forced. Keep up the good work.

Merida's a bit like Astrid. I don't mind a strong, confident, independent woman that spits in the face of tradition when it threatens her happiness, but she was a bit to proud.

Wonder how Astrid would feel about Hiccup going out with another girl?

Actually, before compass were invented sailors used the stars to guide them. In particular, the North Star. Vikings, real life Vikings, were capable of sailing from Sweden to Iceland and Greenland(the reason the two Islands are called such is because of them) and that their longboats(which are not anywhere as deep as galleons or your standard European ship) were capable of traveling up rivers as easily as canoes and were known for their speed rather than their ability to survive a storm.
Greeks had a galley similar to the Vikings' longboats called a trireme(translates to 'three-rower'), which is technically much bulkier but capable of surviving storms and was better for naval battles due to a better ability to ram other ships and the height difference.

So really there isn't a reason to truly separate the worlds of Frozen and Brave from HTTYD (digress the tech level of Frozen to an equal level with the other two), especially when you take into account the book series, which has Romans(who would most likely be occupying the UK at the time) and the TV series traveling Trader Johann.

Now I like Astrid, but I can see where your story is coming from with her, just like with Hitchups story where Astrid thought herself in the right(and technically she was by their culture) but her motivation was wrong.
