This is so awesome :O

So, the first chapter is well written, but I have a problem with the stuff on cancer within this chapter. I don't mean to sound like a rude prick, but to me, this stuff is important.
So, someone with a brain tumour just isn't diagnosed with cancer straight away. In your story it's like, 'oh look, you have cancer because you have a tumour.' No! This isn't how it goes. Let me explain to you.
There are two types of tumours that one can end up with. The first is a benign tumour. A benign tumour is a growth that does not contain cancerous cells. These tend to grow pretty slowly and have no risk to spreading to other organs. The second is a malignant tumour. These are the cancerous ones. They tend to grow pretty quickly and they spread to other organs in the body. This is called metastasis.
To find out which type of tumour one has, a part of the tumour has to be removed (a biopsy) and then examined to see if there are any cancerous cells.
Other than an actual biopsy of the tumour, brain cancer can't be diagnosed from some blood work and some MRI/CT scans. Therefore it makes absolutely no sense that Piper is suddenly diagnosed with brain cancer without having any sort of official examination. Yes, she has a tumour! No, she does not have cancer! (Or at least, she doesn't have cancer yet.)
On chemo. With tumours, unless the tumour is inoperable, the main - and sometimes only treatment needed - is surgery. In Piper's case, if her tumour was found to be cancerous and because (I'm assuming that she was diagnosed with cancer) her cancer hasn't spread anywhere else, then she probably wouldn't need chemo unless there was the risk that cancerous cells were left behind. So if the whole tumour was removed, she may not even need chemo. If she did happen to need chemo, then it probably wouldn't be a lot, as in only 2-4 treatments. Also, it's not just chemo that goes into treating cancer but also a whole bunch of medications. It really depends on the type of cancer that you have though and how your oncologist would wish to treat it. Some people don't even receive chemo. My friend was like that. Just because she had several cancerous tumours did not mean that she definitely had to had chemo. She had surgery and a whole bunch of other things first, like steroids for example.
Also, you said that Piper would lose motor and language functions. So, how many tumours does Piper really have, because if you had researched this, then you would know that language and motor functions occur in completely different areas of the brain! Right, I'm cool now. I apologise for that outburst. So, motor functions, like coordination, balance, and posture, occur and are controlled in the cerebellum of the brain. The frontal lobe also helps in this, but the job us mainly carried out by the cerebellum. There are actually two parts in the brain where language is processed. These two parts of the brain are called the temporal lobe and the parietal lobe. The temporal lobe controls visual and auditory movements and the parietal lobe focuses on comprehension.
Besides various grammatical errors, this story is actually good but for God's sake, do your bloody research!
