Blue Eyes Shining Dragon chapter 6 . 1/26/2015
Welp. I'm super-late to THIS party again, and again I must apologize, because this is a genuinely fascinating story that deserves, just, ALL the love and attention it can get.

I think the thing that most immediately jumps out at me is the unique tone you set throughout the story. It sits somewhere between the broad abstracts of the Mythological and the more realistic, more detailed specifics of a more modern story, but rather than sitting awkwardly alongside each other, you make both elements work smoothly together; they feel of a piece, by virtue of how well you balance them together. The mythological tone is found mostly in the prose, in those great sweeping descriptions of this world and the creatures that inhabit it, while the more modern tone comes most visibly from the dialogue of the characters. There's also some overlap to be found, too; the underlying ideas about Right and Wrong that lie under the surface are of a decidedly modern flavor, while some of the moments of Romantic Pining between our star-crossed lovers taste more than a bit Mythological t'me, in just the best way too.

It also helps that you've constructed SUCH a fascinating little world here, too. A world of hierarchies and rules, where ALL Legends are true and where all these differing ideas and statuses and societies, each with their own little flavors and gradations but all of them bound by this shared Understanding of Who and What they all are...it CRACKLES with life and creativity, and it feels at once original and inspired and not quite like anything else, but also like something that has walked right out of an actual Fairy Tale. The setting and world-building just have SO much character to them, and not only does it help give the story this compelling air of genuine Fairy Tale energy, it also helps to ground the story in a place that feels whole and believable.

Perhaps the greatest element of all, however, is Mickey and Minnie themselves. I adore how you characterize them individually, for starters; the way you show so efficiently how similar they are (dreamers, neither one of whom quite fits in with the group they're "supposed" to be part of, both of whom yearn to push past their own boundaries) and yet how distinct (Minnie is rather more cunning and clever than Mickey, who in turn is more open, more comfortable speaking his mind). I further love how, even as neither one has yet engaged the other directly and indeed both believe the other may be yearning for another, you nonetheless give us this clear, compelling sense of how happy they could make each other. Part of that is the aforementioned Great Characterization, allowing us to see how their traits can balance and compliment each other, but part of it is also the ways in which we see them think about each other in those moments of private pining: we see their thoughts about what the other could make them feel on the one hand, and then you SHOW us how true that impression of the other really is. It's a clever, effective conceit that fits perfectly with the story's Romantic Fairy Tale tone.

So yeah. DEFINITELY a fan of this one. It feels like the right story, told by the right person, and it just delivers SO much of what I look for in Love Stories like this. REALLY loved it. 3
