Guest chapter 36 . 5/25 Ah this is brilliant. Even though it’s unfinished, I enjoyed reading it. |
Marcus S. Lazarus chapter 36 . 5/25 A very well-written example of this ‘genre’ of HtTYD fanfic; good job. Where most fics like this (in my experience) just jump straight to Hiccup returning to Berk (or at least him making contact with someone- commonly Astrid- from the island), you deserve credit for giving us a clear exploration of how both Hiccup and Berk cope without the other, Hiccup exploring the wider cultures outside the archipelago while Astrid finds herself recognising the limits of life in Berk. Her new role as the instructor made perfect sense, as Astrid was always practical enough to recognise her limits where the twins and Snotlout did their best to deny that they even had limits where Fishlegs lacks confidence in himself (Particularly without Hiccup there to inspire him further). Your exploration of Hiccup’s lessons outside of Berk are well-handled, presenting some very intriguing ideas as he learns more about sciences like astronomy (as much as was known at this time, anyway), forming bonds with early great thinkers even as they’re limited on both sides by the knowledge and resources of the time and Hiccup’s own hesitation to share everything with everyone. Astrid’s reading of Hiccup’s dragon-training notes is very well-handled, acknowledging what Hiccup would have started out doing and neatly chronicling how his goals and interests changed as he wrote and learned more about Toothless. The chain of events that led to her being ‘forced’ to train Stormfly are handled well, as she initially just settles for ensuring that the dragon won’t eat her before she finds herself bonding with it basically against her will. The subsequent ‘deal’ with the Jorgensons is also well-presented, acknowledging how Snotlout’s rougher edges haven’t been ‘rubbed off’ by his experiences with the Dragon Academy while still making it clear he’s not actually a ‘bad’ person even if he’s still utterly repugnant to Astrid. After Hiccup returns to Berk, you continue to create an intriguing balance between all relevant perspectives, as Astrid and Fishlegs essentially want to help Hiccup even as they find it harder to accommodate how much Berk will have to change to accommodate his own knowledge of dragons. Astrid’s own difficult situation is further reinforced as you explore her efforts to make a point about her own competence compared to Snotlout without compromising her personal honour or actually putting anyone in DANGER, particularly as her new opinion of dragons conflicts with the 'reality' of the current situation. Hope you haven't abandoned this fascinating project; keep up the great work! |
Gershwin2002 chapter 36 . 5/25 I hope all is well! The story is really nice so far! I like how you convey the characters Astrid, Hiccup, and Fishlegs. The historical additions really added to the story as well! I wonder how Hiccup's inventive side will come into use later? Will Fishlegs play a part in that? Who will find out about Hiccup next? Gobber? Side note: how do you get the phrasing for a third person P.O.V. so it doesn't seem like some lengthy description? |
Ben Thryss chapter 36 . 5/17 Decided to reread this, like, two or three years after I initially found it. Still awesome. I loved the story in Alexandria, and the constant political back-and-forth back on Berk is very engaging. It’s disappointing that things left off just as things seemed to be beginning to turn in Hiccup and Astrid’s favour, but it’s your story. Whether or not you want to continue is, obviously, your choice. That said, I hope you choose to come back and finish this one, some day. Either way, thanks for writing. |
Guest246 chapter 5 . 5/13 So Snotlout is more malicious in this story? I wonder how that will play out later on. |
Guest246 chapter 3 . 5/13 Nice dialog between Astrid and Fishlegs. He is a lot less nervous no, huh? Also, what math is he talking about? Predictive statistics? It is nice seeing more of Hiccup's and Fishlegs' side of things explored! |
Guest246 chapter 1 . 5/13 I like how you used a safe dragon training method. Astrid is somewhat of a thinker as well it seems! |
