Reviews for Objective
Cheile chapter 1 . 1/20/2015
Hiya, EE! Never gotten to tag for you before! FYI that I’ve only seen the Divergent movie so call me half fandom-blind.

So I don’t recognize the characters at all—I will presume they are OCs for purpose of reviewing. I like the description of Ephraim’s uncle Roger is an intriguing one, how Ephraim notes that his fingers are bony but the rest of him is fat. Even tho he does not say it, I get the sense that it is an inward form of criticism of his uncle that he doesn’t voice….perhaps that his uncle appears soft as opposed to strong, as a judge should be.

Roger’s interpretation of the philosopher’s words make some good points—about how there’s more than one kind of truth and how only “external truth” (such as arguing over the color of an object) is easily verifiable but opinions that may be truth are not. His scenario about the man stealing a bag of food from charitable Abnegation members seems black and white—at first. Then he throws out the twist and, while sad but true, how does one value one life over another in many cases? Who’s to say who’s more deserving? I don’t necessarily agree that that is why there needs to be more than one Faction, but he definitely illustrates his point that “truths of the soul” are not always black and white.

Despite Candor’s emphasis on truth, I can see Ephraim’s problem about not wanting to tell his family that he didn’t test out as Candor. Faction traits or not, there are still some things a lot of people hesitate at doing—which is upsetting or disappointing people they care about. And yet Roger has a point as well: [What matters is where you think you belong] In the end, Ephraim really has to decide for himself.

And as he thinks to himself in the end while he’s choosing Amity, he can still remember the lessons growing up Candor has taught him and apply them to the rest of his life in his new faction.

Nicely done :)
Better a Freak Than A Fake chapter 1 . 1/11/2015
To start off, by the end of the first paragraph, without saying the words someone canon familiar can tell that they are in Candor and since she's speaking with extended family, the OC's parents are most likely Candor-born but not necessarily looking at Tori and George.

The worry about her "Oh" being the wrong answer not presenting an arguement though I'm not fandom blind it provides to those that are and even movie fans an intro to the Candor's canon obsession with honest debates.

However, I find by the way that the narrator's sort of treading on holy ground it seems to be encouraging dishonesty. They're not saying what they think. They're saying what they think the uncle wants them to. If this is what the uncle did want, he'd likely be exiled from Candor. If this isn't what he wanted, he'd be able to see right through it just as the Candor teaches. This makes the fic unrealistic.

Also, the uncle himself is not being honest by being so vague on his teachings as the narrator point out which the Candor are supposed to be completely transparent. No beating around the bush.

However, the uncles reaction to her not being Candor is much more realistic to the faction as Candor is the only faction that, as a whole, is openly accepting of transfers out of the faction for the reasons he points out here.

Oh, right! This just clicked. Those in Divergent Chicago know literally nothing of any other place but the city so it would be impossible for the uncle to have that globe.

I did enjoy reading the story as a whole though and looking at your profile I can tell you're a true Candor at heart just like I am. Stay honest.
