This d’Artagnan is so very much OOC. Such a miserable and whiny creature with so low self-esteem and so profound disequilibrium of personality would never ever been regarded as a good material for a warrior by anybody, least by the best musketeers of the regiment. Especially because the canonical d’Artagnan of the TV show is entirely opposite – to cocky, to arrogant, to self-assured for his own good. And then again, this common nonsense about d’Artagnan made by some fic-writer to be a “commoner” for only God knows what “artistic” purposes. If there were no revolt in the regiment as de Tréville became the Capitan of the Musketeers (he was very much of the same upbringing and material circumstances as d’Artagnan), and as Porthos of the Court des Miracles with his African origins or Aramis – born and raised in brothel as the illegitimate son of Spanish prostitute and a French manufacturer of a brandy (in the show) - became musketeers, why all this commoner nonsense because of d’Artagnan? Of course, while in the literature d’Artagnan (Charles Ogier de Batz de Castelmore, Comte d'Artagnan – very “appropriate” name for a commoner indeed) is an archetype of a poor knight, a provincial gentleman with little land and without money who came to Paris with four écus in his pocket (de Tréville in his time had had only three), with his familial sword and his name of a gentleman to conquer a standing in Paris, the show had diminished d’Artagnan’s social standing a little but never made him a commoner (he has a farm, but he decidedly is not and has never been a farmworker himself, he can live several months in Paris from the income– there are servants and tenants on his land, who run it for him and pay to him, and he has failed not as a farmer, but as a feudal to protect his land). There are several times in the show where d'Artagnan tells that he is a gentleman and raised as such. And no commoner in France would be ever allowed to wear the nobility particle d’ before his surname – in that case it should be just Artagnan. The particle d’, de, de la, du, des before family name in France has the same meaning as a title lord, lady or sir in England. Non-less. Of course, d’Artagnan is very far from the high nobility to which belongs Comte de la Fère, but then it was extremely unusual that somebody of so high standing as that of Athos became a musketeer. Athos was unique and thus his name and title was not known in the regiment. Even by his closest friends for several years. There was no another grand noble in this regiment. The attempts by some fic-writers to make that regiment as an assembly of the high French noblesse, where everybody is at least as highborn as Athos and such a provincial gentleman as d’Artagnan is regarded a commoner and to lowborn is just pathetic. D’Artagnan was not an outrage to the regiment, because the most musketeers were exactly from his social standing. Porthos and Aramis (again in the show, not in the book) are much more problematic than him from this point of view.

Personally, I think the thought process of d’Artagnan makes sense to me so I don’t know why you’d worry people would tell you it doesn’t work that way. Enjoying this so far.

Amazing! I loved every piece of this take especially the cute little brotherly moments. I knew there had to be a logical explanation! Thankfully everything turned out ok and nobody died. At least, none of the good guys. Lol Thanks for sharing!

As someone who suffers from anxiety, I can totally relate to this. I know it's been awhile since you posted this but I've only just started watching this series and am hooked! I can't wait to see what happens next as I'm sure there's gotta be a good explanation for the others behavior.
Mysteryfan17 chapter 2 . 9/17/2016
You... that... he tried to hang... if I could get my hands on his bloody neck I'd... I can just imagine what they thought, fearing his neck had broke from the impact. They'd never forgive themselves if he'd been worse off than he was. I hope they made sure those traitors were just as black and blue, if not moreso, for what they did. Hope you aren't tired of me gushing over your works but, come on, h/c is my drug and you have so many here. :D 10/10
MerryLittleMess chapter 2 . 9/3/2016
Fantastic story! I loved the tension between D'Artagnan and the thrre musketeers. And your dialogue especially was spot-on.
SheLovesGreenTea chapter 2 . 1/26/2016
I don't know what you seemed so anxious writing this. It's bloody frickin' brilliant! Honestly, it's so well thought out, everyone was in character, and I loved it so. You're a wonderful writer and this fic could have been an episode. Well done, and trust yourself.

That first line . . .
And then, "He decided he was going to awkward for the sake of it."
For such an angst filled story, it has a delightful amount of humor.

LJ chapter 2 . 8/7/2015
Seriously, Treville owes d'Artagnan a serious apology. Despite his good intentions, he only put the kid in more danger by keeping him in the dark. Personally, commander or not, I would've given his sorry behind a piece of my mind.
Runner043 chapter 2 . 5/22/2015
Uh!... poor d'Artagnan! That's a whole lot more than just whomp on the young pup.
Penguinrunner chapter 1 . 4/3/2015
