Thats a detail about Mrs. Clennam I dont remember, but its either well observed or well-invented. The old lady does give off a freezing atmosphere, and its no wonder if it hurts her worse than anyone around her. And that little thought of Amys at the end is perfect - the very first, subtle hint of love to come.
