Reviews for The Great Pretender
Picandy chapter 1 . 3/10/2015
Can I just point out how unique your writing style is? I love it! Your writing is so interesting and quite honestly, it doesn't feel like I'm reading a normal fanfic that I'd usually find. The writing style you use is so much more fluent than other writing styles I've encountered. I'm jealous! I wish I could write like you do!

Ruzaki is an intriguing character, and I'm glad that your story isn't the usual romantic girl-meets-host-and-falls-in-love story (even though my own fanfic is like that... whoops...). Your story is a good different.

Anyways, I can't wait to read more!
Mipichi chapter 4 . 2/5/2015
Yes that was indeed an angsty chapter poor Ruzaki x) I liked it :)
SophieNewman chapter 4 . 2/2/2015
...
I honestly don't think I can say anything about this (HUGE) chapter, because I just seriously loved all of it. I like how you write. It isn't stupid or materialistic like other fics (mine included :P). It's very... poetic. ;) Eloquent. Lovely.
And the poem at the end... beautiful. :)
Looking forward to the next update! :D

RM Kox chapter 4 . 1/31/2015
Did you make up what Ruzaki says by the water fountain? I really liked the conversation between Kyoya and Ruzaki. :)
AvionVadion chapter 4 . 1/31/2015
I think I forgot to review this when I read it Tuesday. XD My bad. I really liked this chapter, and I like how Kyoya is helping him out, and I still find it hilarious how everyone is scared of him. Poor Ruzaki, though. I wonder how he's gonna learn to be able to transfer his words onto paper... Great chapter, though! I loved it.
TheHuntressofstories chapter 3 . 1/6/2015
I'm loving this story so far. While it is only three chapters, each chapter is of a considerable length. I'm going to try and give some useful constructive criticism, so if I'm too harsh or offend you, I apologize in advance.

Characterization-
The Host Club characters have such simple yet complex personas. The way they act and interact with each other is exceptionally hard to capture in words. After all, if there's one thing to do that's impossible in writing, it's writing humor.
However, you characterization of the Host Club members is fantastic. What I've noticed us that you've exaggerated them; even more so than in the actual show. Kyoya has a darker personality, Tamaki is more flamboyant, the twins more, for lack of a better term, gay, as well as mischevious, Honey more crude and Takashi... I'm pretty sure he's the same.
This isn't an issue, it's actuall working in your favor. It's hard to describe the antics that happen in anime, but you're doing really really well. Good job!
As for your OC, Toyoda, he seems... Expendable. He's sort of just there on the side, with his lack of confidence that the rest of the Hosts have. However, his dilemma is making for an interesting story, even though nothing has really happened apart from him spouting off random opinions and stories in relation to poetry, which honestly, can be dull. Every time I see that giant block of text I have to take a deep breath, brave myself, and endure what feels like a giant lecture. This may only be my problem though. Despite my love of literature, I've always disliked poetry.

Writing style-
I am partial to writing in third person, so your story is enjoyable to read. Your writing style is different to the convential use though, yet somehow fits perfectly with the show. It feels as though you are actually narrating the anime.
There are a few slips in grammar and spelling, easily forgiven, easily forgotten. There really is no remedy for that, unfortunately, unless you're willing to spend hours upon hours for editing. I know I don't have that much spare time, and I'm going to take a leap of faith and say that you don't, either.
Chapter lengths are well sized, word choice is excellent, and the flow of the sorry is unbroken. Done well here as well!

Dialogue-
Here's where I think you need some work. As mentioned before, large blocks of text aren't enjoyable to read. They're an eyesore, and I know that people tend to skip over them. I'd suggest making someone interupt halfway through with a question or a puzzled statement, to bring the point into focus and keep the reader's attention.
Other than that, the dialogue flows well. Sometimes though I find your characters saying something that no one would be caught dead saying in real life, like Toyoda saying, "I cried, just as any boy would at the burial of his mother"
What self respecting teenager says that? Maybe it's because Toyoda is an aspiring poet, but I'm pretty sure that if I met a male teenager of his age, they wouldn't admit to crying, and they certainly wouldn't say ''the burial of my mother'
For these sorts of things, I try to read aloud the dialogue. Hearing it aloud can sometimes make you realize just how weird it sounds.

To finalize this review, I'd just like to say that I hope this doesn't deter you from writing this story. I've enjoyed it immensely. It's just that sometimes, when I see a story as good as this, I can't help myself in trying to help in any way I can. If I can ask one thing of you, please don't give up on this story. It has to be one of the best Ouran High School Host Club FanFics I've read.
