I'll say it one last time (at least on the reviews of *this* story, lol): Your Noakes family is adorable. And the Cockney dialogue seems accurate, as far as the appendix of 'The Midwife' and what I can hear in my head. Creative expressions thrown in there, too. I'm starting to think you either grew up hearing that dialect, or you really did your research. Either way: respect. :)

Also: good on Irene and May for both stepping up for grandma duty!

What a PERFECT ending line!

I am delighted that both generations see Chummy and Peter as "the kids," and Peter's parents and aunt as "the adults"- even though "the kids" are both over thirty.

It may not have been a 'proper', proper proposal. But it was proper enough for them, and that's what matters. :)

Very apt observation, that she's happy about sleeping with Peter because it was her own decision. As much as she loves him, I think half her joy after-the-fact is just from asserting herself- it's still such a rare and brave thing for her to do, at this point.

I never considered that Chummy giving her "no longer entitled" line over the phone might have offered her a bit of personal safety... yikes... I am so, SO glad that she has no regrets though, not even the very next morning.

"That might have been a euphemism if his father had known better." Oh. My. GOD! That's priceless!

I really enjoy getting more little bits of the older Noakeses' backstory. And it warms my heart how Peter's dad promises to be there for Peter and Chummy, even if the FCBs straight-up disown her. I wouldn't expect anything less of a Noakes, at this point.

So. Everyone's on the same page now. Camilla and Peter love each other, and they WILL get married- stuff Lady Browne's opinion. Now, how long until said biscuit tin euphemism comes true? *grins wickedly*

I love that she's getting bolder about what she wants. And all the cute details, like the way she feels when he calls her Camilla, and his "No. Comfy." when he's asleep! :D

Okay, I know I said before that I liked Irene, but now I LOVE her. Chummy got a raw deal on her actual mother, so she 100 percent deserves a fantastic mother-in-law. Irene is not only filling that role already- but she's perfectly aware of it, too.

The discretion and silence around women's issues- the way Irene has to make a second trip back to her friend, the fact that she'll tell a woman she's only just getting to know about her miscarriages while they both understand that Irene's own son is never to know... It's another aspect of their society that has (somewhat) changed in our own times, but you write it so well, it feels like being back in the 60's.

Calling her Mrs. Noakes in the last chapter? Talking about their children in this one? Peter has absolutely NO chill, and it's great! :D

On a serious note: the way you make it clear that the family friend's daughter had a lobotomy, without ever using the word, is skillful and poignant.

I think what impresses me most about your stories is the psychology of the two of them, especially Chummy. "She was normally so efficient in making mountains out of molehills," indeed.

When I first started watching the show, I thought Chummy's "nil desperandum," "travel hopefully" persona was her actual personality through to the core. More casual CTM viewers may never see too far beyond that. Even "The Midwife" doesn't delve much deeper.

But given the life she's led, the insecurities she's grappled with, it makes perfect sense that Chummy tends towards worrying. And the show does portray that if you look closely. Clearly, you've looked VERY closely, because you create your own story moments where she lets that side of her personality show- and he responds to it- in ways that ring true to them both.

"Pushed slightly by Sister Bernadette." In other words: she ships it! :D

I like Irene! She's spunky, and she clearly already loves Chummy!

Your Noakeses sound very Cockney. I like it though- it's nicely done. And Auntie May's prying gives us a wonderful chance to hear more about Chummy's family of origin.

I like how you consider the angles with Sister Julienne's dilemma here. It's something that's kind of hard to wrap our heads around in the 2010's, but you explain it well- including her reasons for eventually conceding.

I could just picture Lady Browne referring to Peter only as "The Constable," and Sister Julienne's joy and relief at their being overstaffed (for once in, like, ever,) and Chummy being a little too loud in her own joy. Jenny and Trixie are awesome as always- Trixie to the rescue with her "strength," lol. Aaand now I have the Beatles, "With A Little Help From My Friends" stuck in my head. Not that it's a bad thing!

I love them being found together and the discussion that followed! Peter's mother is so much fun-her calling him "Einstein" cracked me up! And that last line was so very sweet.

I like the way you write dialect. Sometimes I have to say it out loud to figure out what they're saying, but it sounds completely right.
