Reviews for Pokemon Conquest: The Legend of Ransei
HunterHQ chapter 1 . 1/20
It may be late to say this but considering fairy is now a type any chance you may do a story on a new Fairy Kingdom?
TheGrunt22 chapter 55 . 9/15/2019
And thus, it brings us to the finale. The finale to your magnum opus that you've been at long work as the King of Pokemon Conquest fics. A game that you've done well to keep alive despite its fairly poor release date inbetween late gen 5 and gen 6 and thus got the generation 5 game heavily overlooked as Generation 6 came out for the 3DS and the whole...revolution that it brought six years ago. But that's another story for another time!

It's finally come to the conclusion and I have to say that I have been extremely impressed by your handling of a certain creature in this situation: Arceus. You see, you've captured the immense, humbling, and awe-inspiring presence of a deity in the present. It's not your typical LOL I AM POWERFUL BOW DOWN BEFORE ME you see in more average, mediorce fics, but a feeling of majesty, awe-inspiring, holy, and humbling were ever present. I imagined if I was there, it would actually be hard to even look at the White and Gold Deity. Like we're not talking lower case g. No, we're talking about capital G in God being present. From feeling the massive pressure on the mind, to being humbled and barely even able to speak as, and being frightened like in the wake of a loving, yet harsh father who would not hesitate to dish out judgement.

But most of all? Something you can hardly comprehend. Barely comprehend. One whose ways are not our ways and you've captured it well. Something nobody can understand with a secular mindset. Well done, truly.

Nobunaga being cursed to practically wander eternally makes me wonder about a few concepts I remember from Generation 4. I believe one of those books spoke of something like an immortal wanderer? If not, then I do remember the manga mused about the armor and sword of that one Pokemon slayer that smote Pokemon before Giratina (seemingly) showed up to tell him off for doing so before disappearing beyond sight, being a present relic and that the owner of such arms was still alive. I'm not too sure - it's been a long time and other than AZ in generation 6, I'm certain there was talk of an immortal walker around the world and it quite could be possible be our dear cursed Nobunaga.

Either way, this is Nobunaga's final Kreia moment. Of Kreia hating the Force itself and seeking to destroy it as the cause of eternital conflict and seeking to destroy it. Or rather, one of the desirable outcomes she wished to accomplish as simply rebuilding a Jedi Order. Arceus however, isn't having any of this matyrdom in a suicidal attack upon him. Only God gets to be the final arbiter in the end.

The Lucifer comparison to the black Rayquaza is something worth to point out. Not too much that can be said about that other than the dragon in this case was merely a weapon and vessel that let himself be commanded by Nobunaga. I presume the dragon was sent elsewhere from his seemingly thanos-snaped induced fate. It's almost a nice little jab at how much on a meta note, Rayquaza has taken precedent over Arceus in terms of the sheer amount of attention he's gotten from Game Freak and the rest of The Pokemon Company. Mega Evolution form non-withstanding too. And thus, as apparently the strongest of the 'mortal' gods, people turned to him more than what's actually far, far above. Maybe there's something else I'm missing here, but I think I got the overall gits of it!

Tadashi's madness incuded mind has been cleansed of the corruption that had taken ahold of it, as if a new clarity from his link from the Creator himself has cast away the dark clouds. Like as we pray towards God to forgive us of our sins. And being a more wholesome step in a new direction. It also mirrors Bloodborne's Ludwig the Accursed becoming Ludwig the Holy Sword of which one goes from a mad feral beast to a sensible and intelligent being once again. But he's always been there, all along. His guiding moonlight. The light shining in the dark that will not be overcome.

In the end though, as the twins separate and go their own ways in their leadership of differing lands, it was a bittersweet, yet happy ending. As pointed out, the sun is starting to come over the horizon and a new day is coming towards. A new day, a new chance, a new hope. Awakening under the morning sun. On a funny note, Oichi can perfect link with dragons in the game. Fitting she'd get Zekrom's stone as perhaps her brother's final gift to her along with his nation. But anyway, it's satisfying to see the main cast come to a happy ending that after so much darkness, there is a new dawn and new hopes to come to. Hideoyoshi always will get a chuckle out of me for being the glorious large ham that he will now and forever be, haha.

And that concludes Ransei. I feel a lot of satisfaction with such a nice ending over a long period of what had occurred. May the cast find their worth in the waking world.

Times change and so does our writing, our skills, our feelings, our viewpoints, and how our imaginations plan things out. Complete with new material entering the field that we like and thus seek to incorporate. As you told me yourself, Bloodborne has been a mighty big inspiration for you and how the endgame came to be was because of the game's themes that switched in the half-way point that, mixed with the many speeches and philosophy of Kotor 2, influenced the half-way point of this fic as well that it went from a relatively mellow fic to dealing with the interpersonal connections of people falling into darkness and madness. Of the corruption of people into beasts, long term scheming, and just how ugly war rather is and the best one can do in it is just doing what you can. Had Three Houses been released years ago instead of fates and as it was, Switch or no Switch, I'm certain we'd see many of the themes from there crept into here as well. Maybe coincidental? Maybe not. We only know that IT JUST WORKS! It all rhythms, like poetry.

But that's just the curse of time as we get older. Still. You've come a long way and stuck to this fic to the end and despite a few of my own difficulties in understanding the names because I am just so filthy bad at them, I'm glad to of been brought on this journey and written telling of Conquest and done so in your own way that it isn't just a cheap novelization that only rewrites what we see on screen. Stuff that we already know but we don't get any fulfillment over what happens because we already know. This fic of course, being far from it with its own characterizations and spin on the events of the plot.

Still. I am happy to of done what I can in helping you out in your works, and perhaps it may be time for you to set aside the pen and paper, you're always welcomed to come back. Reading and reviewing is a whole lot easier than it is writing out lengthy ambitious projects that span several years to get even a significant milestone from one point to another. You've done well and feel accomplished for drawing as many as you could to this story. It's given me a lot to think about and on the night that hell has frozen over in the anime world, I feel it's appropriate to give my concluding thanks for writing this out. Be glad that you have than rather letting it rot in your imagination to never see the light of day and truly thanks for sharing in it!
TheGrunt22 chapter 54 . 9/15/2019
Professor. I have something to ask of you.

It seems that I've stumbled upon a fanfiction that's covering a feudal Japan period full of fantasy material and Pokemon. And I am terribly sorry in making these reviews for I am truly late. Please, I beg of you. Will you accept this review as worthy of your own?

Yours truly, copyright-friendly-Seteth.

It's truly been a long journey for all parties involved, that the end is in sight. It's funny as none wishes that this day would've come, as the end is in sight. Perhaps. Nobunaga in his Xanthos gambit is accomplishing what he wishes for to happen - a united Ransei, whether or not it's under his banner, or someone else's. Someone else that's more fitting to lead it for brighter times. Probably why he cast out his fanatically loyal page boy as so he could see a brighter tomorrow while what happens next just might as well kill him. Such Martyrdom sounds familiar to a certain protagonist of the story, yes? But that's only just digging in at the surface and not getting into too much specifics.

It is a pity that Reshiram isn't going to be appearing in the story, as given its duo relationship with Zekrom. But I understand the notion of not wishing to turn the finale of Ransei into as you described, 'kaiju slugout.' It would only prolong the finale and drag out a conflict that's already long, and make it much more lengthier and a bit pointly. Perhaps I may entertain the notion that post-story our dear Ignis, Hideoyoshi, sets off on his own little journey when the dust settles and comes across the dragon to whom he can have a perfect link as he cam in the game? It's a fun little bit to imagine I confess. But I liked that little story and how it hints at something else, while painting Monotari as Nobunaga's opposite in the ideology field. In the way that Reshiram and Zekrom contrast each other.

There are multiple Kreias to this story, each of them embodying part of her own planning and scheming, and sheer long term planning with seeking to win their wars with not brute force and bloodshed, though that may serve in part of it, but in manipulation, scheming, and planning out their own goals. Nobunaga being one within his own Xanthos gambit of willfully playing the bad guy at the bitter end as to force the protagonists to do what's needed and so that they'd confront him at the very end. Monotari for seeking to replace an old and flawed order with something new, more pure, more insightful, and not seeking for such petty atrocities to repeat themselves.

And so we finally get to Nobunaga's villain exposition. Of how that yes, in the end, he is the villain of the story and mythos he had spread throughout the region, and now the valiant hero is coming to stop him and unify the region under his own banner. Each and everyone was in the end, a pawn to be positioned in a way that they'd be unleashed in the right moment and right place. The battle itself was a tough one, and sheer power wasn't going to win itself against a Legendary, instead having to go down a much creative route to bind the Legendary and defeat him. Dear Nobunaga's fall from the tower reminds me of the Kalos anime of which Lysandre does the same thing seemingly after his first, initial defeat ontop of a tall, tall tower.

Speaking of Kreia, I still notice more analogies with her many, many speeches, with the latest in Nobunaga's rant being that of Kreia's own rant to the Jedi Masters in the light side route of Kotor 2. Such as when Nobunaga was musing about those blinded by strength, but by cowardice one was not. Like how one can turn away from such power and still live? Because they were afraid! Either way though, like Kreia who orchestrated her own defeat at the very end of the game where the apprentice will now surpress the master, so too has Nobunaga. And just like her, he won by losing this fight. Ransei is unified.

In the end, the hero won, haha. Defeated the villain and thus for all the squabbling with all those below, it's over. Everything's conquered and there's no more point to the fighting...while someone gets an un-dutiful end. But is it? There's one final thing to do that we all remember in the games and accomplish before it could be considered truly over.

Before I continue onto the final part, Forgive me. Sometimes I swear though that it can be hard to keep up with the names that can be fairly hard to remember and keep continued track of whom is whom and how they look like. That's probably the hardest thing with Ransei with the sheer amount of names and colorful cast of characters is remembering whose name belongs to whom if you haven't been involved with Conquest for a long period of time. Sure we all remember Nobunaga - who the heck doesn't with how infamous he is in history? But the rest can sometimes be quite vague. Sometimes writing these reviews and trying to capture each and every single moment he want the audience to seek out and find can be quite tedious and sometimes I'm prone to overlooking a little thing. I've been trying my best to keep up with many of the names but sometimes I just find myself at a pause that I very often have to go back to previous chapters to remember anyone that isn't the main duo, Hideoyoshi, Nobunaga, and lastly, Oichi. I apologize for missing out on many of the things you've probably wished for me to find, such as every little reference I know you love to make, but wind up grossly overlooking.

But anyway, there's one final chapter for me to cover and prove myself a good and dutiful reviewer that's stuck with you from near the beginning, and all the way to the end!
TheGrunt22 chapter 53 . 9/15/2019
As Hell has finally frozen over in regards to a certain Pokemon League out there, it's only fitting that I get off my procrastinating butt and start getting back to reviewing some special stories out there!

But here we are, coming down to the final curtain. Will the chapter work? Will the ending leave us fine and satisfying I don't know, it just works! It just works! It just works! Please understand, it just works! If Todd Howard has forced you to sit through New Vegas as so Chris Avellone's writing may once again work its way into your mind...then that's probably the only thing he's ever done right lately. The 7th anniversary of Conquest's release in North America. It's been that long hasn't it? Time certainty flies.

Before I begin, I'll say this. Your writing continues to be as stellar as ever, if not even better with each progressing update.

Like father, like son. For do a father's sins pass to his son? But in this case, more like willingly walking down the same path that apparently only the perpetrator alone can understand because only he has the strongest will to make those choices, isn't that right Mr. Stark? Monotari seen it before, and it's happening again.

I'll do what I must. I'm sorry mister Obi-Wan figure, you think that reference would escape me? haha, you are mistaken about a great many things!

Tadashi willfully walks down the dark path of madness, as if somehow sacrificing everything he is with no value of self means he'll. The road to hell is paved with good intentions - if you become as every bit as evil as those you fight against, then what's not to say one monster has been replaced by another? Fighting darkness with more darkness does not dispel the darkness. Mmm... perhaps that analogy is too akin to becoming the enemy to fight the enemy as his case here is more along the lines of damning himself so others don't have to. And being so keen on matyrdoming himself in the progress as if its any absolving grace.

It's such a quiet thing to fall. But far more terrible is it to admit it. I know we've covered this tact before, but the big theme you're showing here is that in the case of war, ugly things get brought out. Between the perpetraitor. It's as if in those many RPGs that covers these grounds of given the Light and the Dark side choices that effects your character and their deposition, then Kazumi has certaintly stayed on the light while Tadashi has embraced the dark side. But they're not the only ones effected by it - what also goes on around them with the characters that are all involved in the mess.

Like a chess piece, hah. An ugly scene to be sure, and like with what I said above, something for the youth certainty not see. But no game of Chess can be won without pawns, and it was certaintly a long game indeed. One that as the Aurorans are close to conquering the whole Arceus-shaped map, is coming to a close.

But maybe I can see one little Force Unleashed reference thrown in this mix. With Monotari as the Kota and Oichi. In Tadashi's darker moments, there's still one bright spot he's hanging onto. At least one that has not kept him from devolving into a complete beast.

Either way, there isn't too much for me to specifically comment on as this review is way, way overdue and I've not been paying my library fees, haha. It's the episode that's the calm before the storm as the next two that follow it are part, and this chapter was covering loose ground with the main cast that's had considerable character development and interaction with the story as a whole. Complete with numerous star wars references too! Like lets recap, the bright twin whose stayed stable and sane, the dark twin whose trying to become a beast to fight beasts, and lastly the old mentor whose done his far share and wishes to keep the dark one from making history repeat, dearly hoping that it isn't the blood that's driving him.

Remember. Nobunaga can be an offense term. Refer to him as "not-so-diabolically challenged."
G chapter 55 . 8/22/2019
Crap, gotta double-review. A couple things I forgot to say. After reading Mr. Grool's review, I agree that the major/minor supporting characters deserved some resolution, like maybe a Fire Emblem-style epilogue. Also, Nobunaga's punishment really reminds me of the RWBY Volume 6's flashback episode, when Salem is cursed with immortality till she learns to appreciate life and death. Wonder what things he might see in his wanderings. Maybe he and AZ could go on an immortal hobo trip.
G chapter 55 . 8/22/2019
Well, it's a shock to see this finally over after discovering it nearly 2 years ago, but we'll, this was an amazing novelization of the game, and it really added depth and flavor to Ransei. In particular, you truly captured the characters, gave them depth with backstories, and a living, breathing world to interact in.

As for the last two chapters, I understand you not including more legendaries because it really would not have made sense and would have been ridiculous. That being said, kinda disappointed that Mitsuhide didn't drop in at the last moment riding an Articuno with renewed resolve(?). Also, yeah I get that Kenshin logically had to bite the bullet before Mewtwo could jump in. Also, I get Reshiram was seemingly sending people visions with Motonari so as to push them in the direction of truth without any direct intervention, but was it linked with Motonari since he was the Hero of Truth, and did it simply pass on to Hideyoshi as a new bearer of Truth? In any case, kind of confusing.

As for Infinite Tower, you definitely captured the majesty of Arceus and its status as the Original One, but I feel the lack of a final warlord scramble or any real battle between Rayquaza and Arceus was a bit disappointing and anti-climactic, especially since the peanut gallery had naught to do. All in all, absolutely solid work.

Final word, I also wish one minor plot thread was resolved, Kunoichi's heritage (even though we all know). Also, what did Kotaro actually know? Also, missed Keiji, though maybe he was there?

Mr. Grool chapter 55 . 8/12/2019
You already know how happy I am for you in finishing this story, so let's just skip to the review. Of course, I'll end up gushing about your fanfiction career at the end, anyways.

I'd call this ending a clever use of "subverting expectations," because while it didn't include some battle of epic proportions, it perfectly fits the style and themes of the overall story. You've made it clear that this retelling is character-driven, and you've delivered a perfect conclusion to the character arcs of your main characters and villain. Tadashi, specifically, really came into his own during these last chapters, and I've greatly enjoyed his arc to accept the love and help of his friends and family. Overall, though, the arc that benefited the most from this "anticlimax finale" was Nobunaga, himself. Ending this story with an earth-shattering battle between Rayquaza and Arceus would've been exactly what Nobunaga would've wanted, but he was denied it. A punishment like that really hits home for his character, moreso than any other fate Arceus could've given him.

Speaking of, I didn't realize how much I was looking forward to a true, humorless portrayal of your rantsona. The sheer power and mysticism of Arceus was the highlight of the chapter, all thanks to some grade-A prose and stunning imagery on your part. I especially enjoyed seeing your drafts and ideas from other stories come together for a literally godlike portrayal. You've done your favorite Pokemon justice.

I suppose it's redundant to give much more criticism, but I will do so regardless. While this shorter ending was a great choice for the main heroes and antagonist, I was hoping to see a sentence or paragraph for many of the secondary or minor characters. Motonari, Shingen and Ginchiyo all at least deserved a speaking role in the final chapter, and it does feel like there are a lot of loose ends that weren't completely tied up. Mitsuhide, Keiji, Ujiyasu, Takakage and the Auroran trio also deserved a proper ending, as well. In Mitsuhide's case, it didn't even need to be a happy ending, just something to acknowledge the characters who we spent so much time with beforehand.

This final chapter was a proper use of a bittersweet ending, in my humble* opinion. Rather than kill a character off for the sake of shock and tears, the melancholy elements of this finale elevate the themes and morals of the story. I noticed that Arceus didn't even deny Nobunaga's claim that humans may try and tear the region apart once again. Now Tadashi, who's wanted to retire since early on in the fic, has to make sure that it never happens, against his personal wishes. It's realistic, and it ties up the idea of flawed humankind quite nicely without feeling contrived. On the other end of the spectrum, seeing Hideyoshi finally get Ignis (and one of his tacticians) back was one of the happiest moments of the story, and put a genuine smile on my face.

I'm not exactly sure which how to describe my feelings over you finally finishing your passion project, though it's most definitely a positive emotion. You've set the bar for Pokemon fanfiction, and I'm blessed for becoming friends with such a talented writer. I have no doubts that you'll succeed in any books or written projects in the future, I truly mean it. My biggest regret is not reading through this sooner (but I still got a mention in the A/N! He likes me, he really likes me!)

Your retirement marks the end of an era, but your story will inspire Conquest writers for years to come. I'm not just saying that, either; even on an unbiased search engine, your story is one of the first to come up when searching "Pokemon Conquest fanfiction." And the title is well-deserved. I wouldn't hesitate to call this the best fanfic, and one of the most fun stories, I've ever had the pleasure to read.

7.8/10, too much motonari
Huinari chapter 55 . 8/12/2019
(I've been following and reading on my phone but I was too lazy to log in and review but I have to now)

First, congratulations for completing the story! Ransei is minor and not very well known and I think it's safe to call you the king of Ransei fanfic. (now that it's over I admit I feel like the escaped fish floating in plastic bag at the end of Nemo - what am I going to do, this was one of the few stories I read on this site)

Second, the 'we sentence you to life' part reminds me a lot of the Aimless One. And I'm also a sucker for god(ly characters) giving punishment to arrogant mortals in ways more complex than smite and fight. We sentence you to live PRAISE.

I wish you all the luck in your new college and the next step in your life, and that any failures you have are those that serve as stepping stone to better you. Thank you for being you.

Dragon King Ryouga chapter 55 . 8/10/2019
Pokémon Conquest was the 1 game outside the mainstream games (XY, ORAS, etc.) that I had absolutely loved. To this day I still love it the Ranger games came close but Conquest was the absolute best in my opinion and it's a shame it never got a sequel. This story was the 1st conquest one I've ever read while I was still starting to get into reading Fanfiction. Anyway this story is one that I will keep close to my heart and will always remember it (especially the part when Kazumi was on a wild goose chase asking everyone's age just to figure out Hanbei's (Never did get to see the conversation between the twins on how she practically forgot they were the same age) XD) anyway I'm a little sad that this story ended meaning no new chapters I'm happy to see such another great story reach it's finale and I hope that this story inspires others to follow in your footsteps and make they're own Conquest Story. Who knows I might write one of my own one day (wish it could be sooner but I have enough stories on my plate rn ) anyway I hope that you live a happy life and continue to move forward. So Thank You and I hope to see you again in the form of another story or one shot. Sayonara

So it's come to an end has it?
...
...Heh. Talk about one wild ride.
Been following this brilliant story since its humble beginnings in the early 2010s. I liked your writing back then, I still like it now.
Everything wrapped up nicely. This felt like Pokémon Conquest's main story was turned into an award-winning epic. An epic that deserves ALL the awards.
It was an honor and pleasure reading this fic and I am amazed at the sendoff it delivered.
If you ever come back, I'll eagerly wait for your return.
But until then, I wish you luck in college. Best wishes.
Enjoy your retirement. You more than earned it.

Mr. Grool chapter 54 . 7/31/2019
Let's get down to business, to defeat Dragnor

One common complaint I've had for this story is the lack of focus on the grand scale of battle. I'm happy to report that this chapter avoids the pitfall completely, and that the battle of Dragnor is one of the greatest, if not the best, battles in the fanfic. You've painted a ton of epic images throughout the entire chapter, from the fighting in the great hall to Hydreigon's Draco Meteor (one of my favorite scenes in the entire story). It truly felt like two armies were fighting for the sake of the entire world, and the ambitions of the greatest warlords in Ransei.

Speaking of the opening battle, you've once again captured why Masamune is one of your best-written characters, in my humble opinion. His fight with Nobunaga, and subsequent teasing of Kazumi, shows the perfect blend of seriousness and comic relief, and I couldn't ask for a better portrayal of the One Eyed Dragon. Nobunaga was particularly effective in the same scene, keeping up the facade that he cares about his troops by firing the Draco Meteor, doing just enough to convince everyone that he's still serious about winning. Ieyasu and Ina's moment together was also appreciated, allowing every major character from the games to have at least one moment in the spotlight. Except Hanzo.

Kazumi had a very satisfactory conclusion to the arc set up in Yaksha, trusting her brother enough to allow him to fight his demons alone. While I didn't get the impression that Tadashi was actively hoping that his sister would put her faith in him, I am glad that he and Oichi got to fight Nobunaga alone, having more baggage with him than Kazumi does. All in all, both of the twins have been fully fleshed out by the end of the story, and have made for truly compelling protagonists from the blank slates they started as in the game.

Motonari's exposition in the library was confusing to read, as are most of his flashbacks to the past. This might've been the intention, given that Hideyoshi seemed equally lost, but I don't think I would've figured out that Motonari is the Hero of Truth if you hadn't mentioned it in the note. It has sparked my interest to read your Motonari standalone fic, at least.

The "final" confrontation with Nobunaga was a thrilling read, with brilliant visuals and an intense battle, of words and of Pokemon. I actually liked Nobunaga's second explanation of his scheme over his first, due in part to Tadashi actually considering his words rather than running at him with a sword over and over. "That you have become suitable for the role is not" was the best line in the chapter for many reasons, not the least because it shows Nobunaga's newfound respect for Tadashi. The battle against Zekrom did not disappoint, either. It was intense, believable and even paid off on Tadashi's training with Motonari, using his mentor's tactics to win.

I'm a bit torn on Kenshin's final moments. On one hand, his death didn't feel quite as impactful when he's spent a large part of the story in the shadow of Shingen, whose death would've hit harder for me. On the other hand, Shingen's relationship with Kazumi and her friends makes me glad that he'll get to see the end of this wild ride.

You have fully delivered with an epic-scale battle and character development in equal spades. I've only been following the fanfic for a year, and even I can't believe you're this close to concluding it. I won't even try to imagine how it must feel for you. Rest assured, if the finale is anything like this chapter, you will stick the landing on one of the best fanfictions on this site.
