Maybe show Harry also gaining? It Hermione was at the Burrow over the summer, Harry probably would have been, too. And while he started off thinner than the girls, he might not have the Weasley boys' metabolism. And Molly is always saying he's much too skinny...

As for shipping, I have no real preference. Maybe Hermione/Krum or Hermione/Neville?

If you're going the slash route, I could see a Snarry if Harry no longer looks like James. Or canon pairings.
