How have I never read this until now? It's so beautiful I cried a little bit. And that story about the brothers and the golden arrow and the dragon was beautiful. Gosh darnit, I love your writing so much.

I found this story only recently. It reminded me that before I discovered "Fallen Star" last year I resisted getting too attached to Loki because he was "just a villain and they're going to destroy him anyway". (Years of agonizing over the uncertain fate of Severus Snape had taken its toll!) This despite the fact that the skill of his actor had made him one of the most interesting, compelling, and loved characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"Splinters" made me wonder what could have been done - besides restoring the footage removed in a futile effort to undercut Loki's impact on the audience - to alter the ending of "Thor" as Thor does in this story, replacing enmity between brothers with love and reconciliation. The most heartbreaking part of the final confrontation is that Thor doesn't know what Loki has learned or why he is behaving so brutally and irrationally. Thirty seconds of explanation from Frigga could have allowed Thor to acknowledge Loki's pain and desperation, assure him that it didn't matter that he was born Jotun and that they were still brothers, and that he must not turn his defense of Asgard into an unforgivable crime by destroying Jotunheim. It wouldn't diminish Thor's importance, but it would recognize Loki's. (Wonder of wonders, Odin might even acknowledge that they were both worthy princes of Asgard!)

Tragedy is powerful. But a story does not have to be tragic to have power.

Thor's story is a familiar hero's journey in which he must overcome a weakness or fault and be "tested" to prove himself worthy. (In Thor's case, he has to learn not to make other people pay the price for his grandstanding.) In the course of this he must confront and defeat an evil villain. There is never any doubt that he will do so. It is a reassuring staple of our popular mythology. It is for princes what Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella are for princesses.

But even more we need journeys such as Loki's in "Fallen Star", where the hero must struggle to overcome not one imperfection but many conflicts and complications, confront his failings and uncertainties, discover what he values most, fight to defend what he loves against a real and terrifying evil, and win. And it's enriched because along the way Thor has to question his own assumptions, Jane has to overcome her fears to learn what she really wants, and even Odin has to learn to understand his adopted son.

I love getting a glimpse of Thor and Loki just being brothers... without any hurt or anger or betrayal to mar the moment. It's beautiful. :) Thank you for this story!

The Apollo 13 theme does sort of remind me of Asgard. Strange...

Can't blame Loki. I've stared at him for longer than that.

How wonderful! I appreciate your descriptions of everything—the clothing, the armor, and the stars in particular.

Thor knowing that he needed Loki to complete the story, and them creating the story together as a positive prophecy, is so well done! Thank you for writing this!

Short & sweet , interesting considering there was a good repoire between all the brothers which isn't going to last.
It would be intriquing if you wrote the rest that happens with the three in the next several years.
As for me I'm writing A Lokane type novella.
Good work, -Loki & Thor of Asgard. (fb page)
