Reviews for A Particular Understanding
WhatIsThis'Sleep'YouSpeakOf chapter 9 . 9/21/2019
Oh dear. If Elsa makes this promise, how will there be a happily ever after for our couple? Will she abdicate? That seems very unlikely, given Anna’s temperament would not be suitable for a queen. I love Anna, but Hans (and you) are right, she’d make an awfully bad queen. And then she couldn’t marry Kristoff! So no, no, Anna can’t take over. And if they have to keep Hans away from the throne... oh I’m sensing lots of trouble ahead. Not the least of which would be this dark and sinister plot to undermine our Queen with obscene pamphlets. They have gone too farpulling Olaf into the frayToo! Far!

I am delighted to get to see Anna and Elsa have time together.

I hope you continue to write more! This story has given me so much fodder for my imagination. Like how the subsequent interactions Hans and Kristoff will have. And how Anna will finally warm up to our reformed villain. And how will they capture the printer of those horrible fliers? I would absolutely love if they were being printed and snuck into town by the Duke of Weaselton, that high strung, strutting toothpick could get sentenced to time in the dungeons.

Ohhhhhhh, that last line. ‘I have to wrap him around my fingers...’. Yes, Elsa, yes. And you are already closer than you know.

I can tell I’m going to be disappointed when I can’t find out how this story ends. Here’s hoping you’ll add another chapter someday. Perhaps inspired by Frozen 2’s release? *fingers crossed for luck*

Anna arrives swinging! Yay!

Items I loved in this chapter:
1. Princess Anna. In the Study. With the Candlestick. Best entrance ever and she deserved nothing less.
2. That adorably absurd list of pros and cons.
3. Hans’ realization and subsequent reaction.
4. The line, ‘But being a practical man and never one to give up...’

Ah HA! He was planning to sabotage her! And then he couldn’t let it happen. Makes me like him a bit more. This villain sure is growing on me. And I’m so glad he is—you’ve done such an amazing job with character development in this story.

I keep going back and forth in my mind about what your field of study must be. First I think you’re a writer, because (obviously) you are so good at it. Really Really good at it. Then I think you must be a historian, because you have added so many layers of complexity and authenticity to it. But then your writing isn’t as dry as I’d expect from one who studies history. Which is probably unfair to historians.

And WOW! The intrigue just jumped up a notch with these obscene pamphlets! What a great twist!

What is going on with Anna? Is she back? Hans seems to think she is. Why has she not objected, vociferously, to this arrangement? Why don’t we get to see that?

I’m really confused what this chapter was. A dream, I assume. It is completely atmospheric, and maybe it will make sense later on, but even now, after having read all the chapters, I don’t get it. Is it a dream of hers, giving us insight into how important Hans has become to her? Maybe throw a tiny A/N our way about what it is or what the significance is?
WhatIsThis'Sleep'YouSpeakOf chapter 4 . 9/21/2019
Oh my. I was certain he was setting her up, then when he rescued her, I wondered what his game plan was. Certainly, it is a long game. But, if the movie is any indication, Hans plays long games. Defending Elsa and being the picture of loyalty, then when everything is going to pot he breezily betrays them all, to his own advantage. What is he planning? *groans in confused frustration*

The romantic rescue from a drowning is a surprisingly frequent trope, common enough I thought with an eye roll, I know where this is going (the eye roll because I have found that being miserably cold and wet, drenched hair plastered unattractively to one’s head and nose red and dripping from the cold, does not inspire romantic feelings whatsoever). But I was completely delighted with the presentation. The freezing of the water, the naive ignorance of a princess who never left her castle (of course! she wouldn’t know algae was slippery, how would she?), the intimacy and pleasant banter. I loved it! Absolutely loved it.

But where the heck is Anna? It must be weeks now that she’s been gone! Seriously, what on Earth are she and Kristoff doing? Why is she gone so long?

I really like what you are doing here with these characters, the backstory you’ve given them. The pain that Hans harbors, from the cruelty of his childhood and disinterest of his parents, is so vividly portrayed in his flashes of anger. It really humanizes him. Still not sure I like him, but it does make him delightfully complicated. And Elsa, loving toward her sister and fearful of her powers, has a sense of duty that permeates her every thought. At first, I couldn’t quite reconcile this version of her with the woman who ran off to the mountain and abandoned her responsibilities, but I do now, after reading more.

Wow. This take on Hans makes him very sympathetic. Never thought I'd find a version where he was a good guy, sort of, but this retelling amazingly does it!

Boy, is it hard to read his harshness on Anna. I so enjoy her effervescent nature; his critiques make me cringe with their painful accuracy.

I'm really loving this story so far. I see it hasn't been updated in ages and isn't marked as complete, so I'm a little scared I'll be left hanging... But I'm gonna read on anyway.

I know Anna means well but I'm so annoyed at her. She doesn't know a bit of their current situation ,of what Hans has done for Elsa and how he feels for her. Anna simply talks based on her past situation. And Elsa just goes along with that :/
I would love to read this story to its end. You are a very talented writer , everything was written so well it felt like I was witnessing it.
Please keep up the good work
Gwinna chapter 9 . 1/8/2019
This is by far the best Helsa fic I've read. The characterization is complex and well thought out, especially for Hans, whose thoughts and feelings we can only guess at in the movie. He's still a schemer, but he has a strong sense of duty, and he's conflicted between the ruthlessness taught by his family and his better feelings which he hasn't managed to suppress. I like Elsa's competence and dedication to becoming a good queen despite her insecurities, and it's believable that she would recognize Hans' good qualities and grow closer to him while working together for the sake of the realm. They have a lot in common and it's easy to imagine them being happy together. I've honestly read this story like three or four times, because it just puts a smile on my face. It's a shame that it remains incomplete (I'm really curious how Hans will persuade Elsa to marry him, and also how the political situation with the pamphlets will be resolved), but thank you for writing as much as you did. Hope life is going well for you :)
salty nap princess chapter 9 . 11/23/2018
i love the baker woman and I'm only half way through the chapter, I think, but I adore how Anna romanticized politics "one day he'll quip about the how even the depth of the arenfjord pales in comparison to the depth of his feelings for you or how even the combined value of Arendelle gross national product is nothing compared to the value appraisal he places on your presence" just wow.
salty nap princess chapter 7 . 11/23/2018
i really love the details and effort you put into this fic, you have no idea. just, wow. and I know kristoff and hans started out bad but I sort of want a brotp
salty nap princess chapter 4 . 11/23/2018

salty nap princess chapter 5 . 11/23/2018
Oh, I'm a sucker for chapter inspired songs. I'm gonna give it a listen
salty nap princess chapter 3 . 11/22/2018
i really like the direction you're going in. I know it sounds like a simple compliment but I'm not ... I don't have a big vocabulary and my expressiveness is so average. I just really appreciate your work
