Appearance (Detailed! ): Alder is roughly 6’1 in height with squared shoulders and a strong upper bod. Alder is wiry and thin, courtesy of malnourishment. Alder’s skin has been darkened to an earthy brown from years in the sun and is dotted with teenage acne, more prominently on his jaw. His black hair is wound tight like a corkscrew and cropped close to his head to fight any unnecessary heat from the sun. He has what his mother calls “doe eyes” which are wide, black, and give an innocence. These eyes don’t match his hollowed, sharp features that would otherwise be full if not for malnourishment. His lips are dark and full.

Personality (Detailed! ): Alder is what one would call a “problem child.” He’s extremely rebellious, and he does not listen well, especially so when he thinks he can do it a better way. He also is not one to back down, even when it could get him in trouble. One prime example is when he was whipped by a Peacekeeper who was inspecting his family’s work. He’s incredibly stubborn, which would earn him the affectionate nickname of Mule, and like a mule, he also works hard and never does anything half-assed(do you get the pun?) as he feels that if you’re going to do something, you better do it right. Alder has a light-hearted sense of humor, which leads to him pulling practical jokes like scaring his little sister in the long grass(something he gets in trouble for often). Alder does not think about what he says when he’s going to say something, and really doesn’t care either way. Alder is surprisingly quiet and introverted. He doesn’t often feel the need to fill silence with conversation. Never, ever, mess with his family, for he’s loyal to a fault and can and will hold a grudge until you or him are dead. He’s a quick thinker from dealing with the young aggressive bulls and light on his feet as well. He’s also stealthy and great at hiding and being quiet. He also loves his family, and never runs out of room in his heart for one more member. Regardless of his tough exterior, at times Alder can just be a softie. If he were to see a young tribute, he would probably leave them alone unless he had to fight them. Even then he would make it quick.

History (Not too tragic please): Alder grew up like most families within District Ten: Working on a ranch to help support his malnourished family. He learned how to work with the cattle and to be quick enough not to get stabbed by young aggressive bulls thanks to his father and older brothers, and he learned to navigate and recognize edible and non edible herbs and plants with his mother. When he was about eleven or so, a group of Peacekeepers came to inspect his family’s work. He’d opened up his mouth and was whipped for shoving a Peacekeeper who’d beat his father for what they called lackluster work. Thanks to his family’s herbal knowledge, he lived, though he became quieter and more reserved because of it.

Family and Friends:
Mother: Ceres Chilrid(36) is tall and dark, with her cinnamon brown hair fluffing out around her shoulders behind a red band, and her eyes are a pale brown. Alder gets his upper body strength from her, though she’s more muscular. Alder gets his hard-working attitude from her, as well as his mischievous side. Ceres can be emotional, but she’s also the man of the house. Alder and his mother are close as can be.
Father: Miller Chilrid(42). Miller is leaner than his son, and just as tall, with the infamous “doe eyes.” All of the Chilrid boys’ hair is dark and cropped close to their head. He has full lips like his son and a close-cut beard. Miller is quiet, yet kind. He loves to play with his kids, and is the most gentle out of all the family’s members. He’s very prideful in his work, and has a big temper.
Vernon Chilrid(18) is the oldest of the children. He has dark skin like every other member of the family with his mother’s eyes and his father’s build. He’s taller than his father, towering over Alder. Vernon has a nasty temper, yet he’s also selfless and curious. He likes walking through the fields and finding flowers and pretty rocks to take home. He’s fairly sensitive and gets his feelings hurt easily. Alder and Vernon get into frequent fights, and thus Alder finds him very annoying.
Arley Chilrid(17) is the second oldest. His eyes are big like his father’s and light like his mother’s. He’s muscular like his mom and roughly her height, giving him a stocky look. His lips are fairly full, a perfect blend between his father’s thick ones and his mother’s thin ones. Arley is patient and calm, a thinker. He’s methodical, but very prideful. He’s horribly pessimistic. When he gets upset, he’s very passive-aggressive, and sometimes it’s hard to tell when he’s upset. Alder and Arley get along fine, and share chores together.
Poppy Chilrid(9) is the baby of the family. Her eyes are big and dark like her dad, and her long curly hair is the same shade as her mom’s and is often tied into a neat bun at the top of her head. Her lips are full and she’s tall and wiry like her mom. Poppy’s skin is a little lighter than her family’s because she isn’t out in the sun working as much as everyone else. Poppy has the same rebellious streak as Alder with a similar attitude. She is very intelligent and takes great pride in it. She’s surprisingly in control of her emotions for how young she is, except when Alder was picked for the Hunger Games. Alder and Poppy are thick as thieves and partners in crime when it comes to rebellion and mischief. Alder often takes her out to go adventuring and pick up herbs herbs with him.

Friends:
Misty “Hummingbird” Quils is Alder’s only friend, as most families in 10 are spread out. Hummingbird’s father was a widower and got sick from a disease. He took Hummingbird to Miller”s so that she would be safe and not die of sickness, and she now lives with them. Hummingbird is lean and tall, though still shorter than Alder. Her skin is about the tone of dark caramel and her eyes are dark brown with a few green flecks. Her black hair sits in loose plaits at her hips when it’s not pulled back in a knot. She has thick lashes and hollowed features like most members of the lower districts. Hummingbird is ridiculously high energy and very rambunctious. She seems to be everywhere at once, and is very fidgety. Hummingbird is clever and a born thief, being agile with quick reactions. She is very neat and tidy. She keeps her area clean and knows exactly where everything is. Hummingbird is resilient as well, not only physically, but mentally as well. Hummingbird is Alder’s ride or die, and they’d be devastated if the other died.

What Did You Do Before The Reaping?: Alder was comforting Poppy and his mom with his brothers while they cried out of fear that their big brothers and sons were going to get picked and die.

Chariot Rider Outfit: Alder was dressed in fashionable tanned hides with frayed ends. Accents of gold lace the outfit and long gold accessories that look like longhorn horns lay at the side of his head.

Interview Outfit: Alder wore a dark blue long sleeved collared shirt, with a black vest and matching pants. At his request, red poppies were embroidered into the base of the vest to represent his sister.

He worked with spears and knives, and he got into a fight with the District Four girl because he “Stole her spear.” He didn’t do the plant puzzle to conceal his skill.

Training Score: 5, Alder got a random mix of plants laid before him, some poisonous and some not, before eating the ones that were safe. He got everything correct.

Alliances?: If someone could tolerate him, maybe a group of two or three. He probably would pair up with someone as resourceful as he is.

Career? (Explain why?): No

Romance?: It’s a possibility, but he would try to avoid it, as he knows it’s not a smart idea.

Just so you know, there was an unnamed dead victor from District 12, and it's never stated that the victor was female. Peeta and Haymitch might have been the only LIVING District 12 victors, but not the only ones.

Ok, this has not been updated in a literal year, but I'm putting my two cents in anyways.

Kids have fun. That is it. I could play baseball with a stick and an old shoe, or soccer with a dead bird. Kids will always figure something out.

Well I kind of clicked on your profile link from a review you wrote in this SYOT, and I found this story. It's really useful... even though I'm super guilty of quite a few of these, especially backstory-heavy characters. Whoops. So are you still giving opinions to unsent SYOT tributes? Because I have some tributes I have yet to send, but am unsure of.

So, this guide has been pretty, um...interesting so far. It's been rather informative, which is obviously helpful. Nice to get the word out to people about what they should and shouldn't do with OCs. Here are my thoughts on a few of these:
3.) Prim going into the Games. This can be done well. You're correct about the Rory and Haymitch things. Way too cliche. And no, her and Peeta would not both go home. Really, they would have most likely both died, rather than won. But however, this can be written well, but if it is written well, Prim will most likely not be the eventual Victor.
4.) The Districts Theories. Okay, I have to agree. I HATE THIS. Rich girls whose fathers are major breadwinners, so the 16-year-old girl has purple hair dye, a gigantic pink dragon to ride, and 83 ponies. UGH. Another thing I hate: When stories include District 13 as a Career District. The Capitol HATES 12 and 13. HATES them. If 13 were to participate, their tributes would not be Trained. No.
6.) The Capitol Games. In an AU, once again, this can turn out well. But no, Paylor would not have held them at all, most likely. But, if Coin hadn't died, they would have gone on. Just once. Not for sixty some-odd years before, oh gee look, a rebellious tribute from THE CAPITOL comes along. No way.
8.) Not Everyone Dates. In canon, true. Very true. But, this is a major part of what FF is used for. Random ships. I'm not really big on shipping, either. But, I usually don't judge. I don't care if someone's shipping Buttercup and Mr. Everdeen's ghost. I don't care. I don't have to read the story. Really, I'd leave this one alone. Whether it be Katniss and Peeta, Clove and Cato, Glimmer and Katniss, Marvel and Clove, Cato and Peeta, whatever, I'd just leave it alone. I just let people ship who they wanna ship. If I don't like it, I don't click on the story. That's all.
9.) Stories That Never Finish. Ugh. Yes, this sucks. I've submitted about 15 SYOT tributes, who have never been introduced. Ever. Never to be seen. The only exception really is if the author has a valid reason. Not "I don't wanna do this" or "I'm bored with it". No. I DID have time to do an SYOT about ten months ago, then my brother was hospitalized due to complications with his Kidney Disease, and I ended up watching my niece and nephew a lot, and that combined with schoolwork, I don't have enough time for an SYOT. I'd say that that's a valid reason. Just abandoning it for no reason isn't, which unfortunately, happens a lot.
10.) People Getting 100 Reviews for 100 Words of Crap, While Great 100K Word Stories Get 50. Yeah, this happens way too often. I'll agree with ya. But hey, people are stupid these days, you know? I've seen way too many cases of this. Love the 'bring it bitch' thing, by the way. Sounds a lot like something I'd say. XD
Anyway, this has been interesting. Just wondering, have you seen that episode of Family Guy with the "What Grinds My Gears" thing? Because if so, nice reference. Nice job, though.

What is a GMFR? No I seriously don't know, i'm new to this fandom

I'd like to think people of color are all around Panem, just with more in certain areas. There can be a Chinese descendent in D1, not everybody is white. There is race mixing, even then. Excluding races out of districts is just senile; not everyone in 1-5 is white/white passing or 8-11 only colored. That's the way I see it but alright I guess

I still have the notes from some characters I made up for a few earlier SYOTs. Can I send them in? :)

while I am not a writer in Hunger Games fandom (only a reader here, my writing fandoms are more in the Tolkien area) I stumbled across your Character Guide... and man, half of what you wrote here applies well to other fandoms too. I wish your basic guide-line could be made mandatory reading for fanfic authors.
