Reading about these two Aces is really fun! :D I like how they are similar but due to their different upbringing also quite different.
I had a lot of fun with the scene where Gol meets Marco! And I'm really curious how things go for Portgas now that he's finally seeing Luffy again - well at least the one from Gol's world!
I really like the idea with the mirror and I can't wait to read more! :)

Or so was my reaction a few days ago when I saw that you updated 'The Mirror Lied'.
Of course I didn't have time to review pronto BUT I did learn from past mistakes so I made notes!

So really I was very very happy to read this- I was prepared to wait quite a while for this, yet hoping I wouldn't have to and BWAM! Suddenly- there it is. It was so unexpected that it was a very nice surprise!

So I started rereading the last chapter to properly appreciate the new one and really that was so wonderfully awkward in an enjoyable way – and it reminded me that I'm rather fond of Gols version of Ace. Though especially with the new chapter Portgas has grown on me, too. Plus I suspect Gol wouldn't be as interesting without the contrast to Portgas!

It's just so much like seeing child Ace interact with not-angsty-WB-Ace...or so I Imagine... only the child one went forward a bit in the general direction of the WB one... and Portgas seems less intense, but then the world isn't out to kill him, while the WB one went backwards and erased all the hurt from his childhood.

Portgas' meeting with Thatch and Marco felt really emotional to me – so very terrifyingly sad!
Sure it's only been a few hours and he'll probably be able to go back home soon, but that right there is the stuff of nightmares. For Ace to meet his brothers and they don't have the same memories and he can't even tell them, because to them he is just a stranger... that they wouldn't believe him if he did tell- that knowledge would terrify me in Aces place!
And with everything being slightly different there is this dream-like feeling going around and damn. That was great.

In a way Gol has it easier, because his parents just don't exist in that place (anymore), so he won't meet them and won't have to confront this. Well, and if they were alive they would still know him and would still be his parents. Plus as far as Marco and Thatch are concerned- if he really screwed up, he could theoretically tell them and they'd probably believe him, too.
Well and thanks to a stable childhood he's more well-adjusted. And kind of has to be calm for Portgas.

In that club scene I kept thinking “Hey Marco, Thatch, of course I know you . I'm your brother! I fell through The Mirror and changed places with this worlds me so... I guess you aren't my brothers here after all. *kicked puppy look*”
Of curse it's the one thing Ace wouldn't say- but especially because it is the one thing, and the truth even, he really can't say it felt like it wanted to be said even more...or something like it.
Like when you know you aren't supposed to say something that is the truth and you wouldn't even say it normally, but the moment you REALLY shouldn't you end up having it on your mind even more and you feel like you might blurt it out- no matter how unfitting and ridiculous, just to get it out?
I suspect Ace may have felt a bit like that, too? It's a good thing he left when he did. If he'd stayed a bit longer even I as the reader might have felt like crying...more than I did.

On the other side with Gol, the picture of Marco confronting him about the looks he gave him popped into my head. (Ok, I don't think Ace was obvious enough about it for Marco to notice more than that something was off, but still)
So- there Marco is, gently telling Gol that he only has brotherly feelings for him and Ace replies while smiling cheekily “Aww, that's alright. I do think you are hot, but I've got my own Marco to convince to go out with me. Don't worry, I've got it on good authority that your me isn't interested in you that way either!”
Probably not going to happen, but it's still fun to imagine! ...And I'm not sure what would be more hilarious: Marcos face and reaction upon hearing that or Portgas sheer mortification if Marco confronted him instead of Gol... “What. I- no. Just...I ...you think... but... GOL! Damn you!”
Jup, fun to imagine.

I wonder what effect that stay on the other side will have on Portgas attitude to Marco and Thatch- to know not to take them for granted- not that I think he does that- and to see them looking at him with recognition again.
Moreover “...Marco... I met my mother.”
Apropos- I wonder if that in itself is a good thing. On the one end he got to actually meet his mother alive. He can see how much she loves him. On the other end- he gets to see what could have been, and has to watch and experience her treating someone else as her son. And again, not knowing him. Well, him him. No wonder he feels conflicted about her.

And so I grew fonder of Portgas. Though admittedly romance/future wise I'm still more interested in seeing Gol, mainly because I'm not as fond of AceLu. Though general feeling/past wise I suspect Portgas may be more interesting. Which actually makes for a nice contrast! Not that there is any boring part.

...I wonder what's different with Luffy...
It also feels strange that neither Ace has Sabo and Luffy as their brother... though I somehow suspect a Sabo might have been in Portgas' childhood... maybe.

Oh, and Ace is right: they really didn't think that though huh? The part where Ace doesn't really know the city either... though they couldn't really have known or changed that.
I wonder where the divergence lies. Is it a near parallel universe that's different starting from Ace's birth or is it a more different universe that just happens to seem as similar as they are?
If it's from Ace's birth then theoretically not that much should have changed location wise... at least around here shops tend to pop up at places where there already used to be shops because a location is either good for it or it isn't, and how much changes in 20 years really, when both places went forward in that time. After all you have to plan big changes and the plans for the first few years would have already existed at the point in time of the divergence. On the other hand, theoretically they could have changed in opposite directions and thus be more different than just the 20 years calculation... Or there are more and deeper differences that just happened to result in the difference of Aces life. In that case he's screwed and and will have to improvise. In that case he's also very lucky that Thatchs bar was still located at the same place and just different on the inside.

Something else I noticed is, that... there don't seem to be many people around Gol. Ace has more than enough just with his brothers and Luffy but what about Gol? Since it's Rogers firm I guess there might be Shanks and co as coworkers (I don't remember whether there was mention of this in an earlier chapter ) but otherwise it's still a blank... On the other hand we know the people around Portgas, yet it's his past that's still shed in mystery...mostly.

It's been a while though so I'm a little confused xP To clarify, Portgas is the one who works at Roger's business and just met Luffy and knows Rouge? And Gol is the one who's friends with Marco and Thatch and Luffy and has the orange bedroom?
I'm so confused about this mirror, HOW DOES IT WORK? I liked the scene with Ace and Thatch and Marco btw, I swear could feel the awkwardness radiating off of my screen xD

So I used to be able to tell the two apart but now I can't XD It's been too long since I last read this! Looks like I have to re-read a few things, including this... Please update again soon!

Oh my god! I so understand why you had fun writing this last chapter; I had so much fun reading it! XD My favorite part was when Gol heard Portgas falling into his world, I'm laughing hard just by remembering it! :D

Though, I can't believe you said you most propably won't write this story anymore... I just got with the flow of the story and all (mainly to distinguish who's who)! Imagining all the misundersandtings between the conterparts and their entourage and if they'll be able or if they'll want to come back in their own universe is starting to kill me!... Well, not really but I can't stop anticipating what's ahead! :)

I love how you portray the two Ace' differently- it's actually easier than one would think to tell which is which... Also Ace' (Gol) interaction with Marco was hilarious XD
…I definitely like Ace (Gol) better though than Ace (Portgas) but I'm guessing he just had an easier and more balanced life... having a supportive mom also helps...

I'm actually kinda hoping Marco and Rouge will be let in on the “secret”- I figure a mom who interacts a lot with her Kid would notice and Marco's already suspicious.
I'd be rather funny if Luffy in his childish way notices, instantly comes to the right conclusion and accepts it just like that- without Ace (Portgas) ever getting a word in.
But I'm kinda guessing that won't happen and it'll remain a secret... oh well! I don't even wanna know because then I can hope until you write otherwise and once you write otherwise I'll be happy because you wrote a great story I got to enjoy reading! _
Until then- for all I know Ace (Gol) could end up together with Marco (Portgas) and Ace (Portgas) with Luffy (Gol) and the whole lot of them end up being a happy big family where inter-dimensional travel is the most normal thing in the world (at last for Ace)! (because I'd doubt they'd want to change positions permanently without visits: Ace (Gol) wouldn't want to give his mom up and I'm guessing the same goes for Ace (Portgas) and his family... huh, that would certainly be interesting and unique, I bet no one would be expecting that! XD

… you know, at first I kept imagining three Ace's (not because of what you wrote but rather as a humor version of your story) with the third Ace being a One Piece Ace in all his fiery glory.
So I imagined the two Ace's being somewhat serious (one more than the other) and more or less normal about the whole thing and then there is Ace (Firefist) who's just... not even from a slightly similar world... going “huh? A dimension connecting mirror? Well, I've seen stranger things... why are you looking at me like that?” or “...now my coffee is cold...” *lights his hand on fire* *other Ace (Portgas) panics* “Wait, you CAN'T do that?” or when he casually mentions something like “...back when I was the Captain of the Spade Pirates...” and Ace (Gol) goes thinking “Well, what are the odds? HE's done something right... and if this isn't overly odd to him then he's certainly not as bored as me!”

… this came to me at chapter 2... by chapter 4 I was immersed enough in the story to forget all about it and just read... so thanks for writing so far!

so enough of me randomly rambling! I wish you fun writing!

I actually love this. The interaction between Gold and Portgas is gold.
Whether or not you plan to continue this, I'll look forward to any future updates. o
