This is set immediately after the end of Chapter 22 of The Innocent Mage, when Asher and Gar are returning to Dorana from the coast and sleep in the empty barn. Asher has awoken from a bad dream and muses over his relationship with Gar. Mild Slash.

Takes place after Westwailing and Asher has a fever, as his assistant Olken Administrator lies in his bed, Gar waits by his side, waiting and pondering his relationship with the man and realises that he needs Asher just as Asher needs him. It's not long after Gar sacrificed himself that Asher's grief overtakes him into near insanity. But just on the brink of his sanity breaking, he finds that Barl has left a hidden message in the diary that Gar had previously decoded. Now all he needs to do is decipher it, and use it. And maybe then...just maybe, he'd be able to make amends with the man who he'd loved dearly... Gar.
