I am a beta-reader the same as I am a writer - I enjoy to write, I enjoy the art of stories. The only expectation I really have of anyone who asks for my help is to give me ample time to actually read and critique their writing - if you give me two hours to read, critique and help you to re-write an entire story, more than likely it's not going to work. I do work a full time job and a part-time job, but I still enjoy to read and compliment other people's work. In terms of style, I follow how stories were originally created - they were meant to be read aloud to an audience, to captivate and motivate them with wondrous tales. br /

That is how I will beta - the same as I write. I read everything aloud to myself (as in reading the chapter aloud) and try to make it as pleasing to the ear as I can.

My strongest areas in writing are structure and flow. With good paragraph and sentence structure you keep the attention of your readers. Good flow is all about good grammar and proper language, as in keeping your characters in their normal attitudes and habits and not totally bending and remodeling them to suit your own story.

My weakest area is probably focusing on more than one set character at a time. For instance, if you take two characters out of a show and put them in a story together, I find it a little difficult to keep them both in-character all of the time. I have written many stories like this and have been told that I do fine with it, but it is still my weakest point.

I really don't mind what kinds of stories I beta, but I do prefer some more than others. Generally I am good at proofing stories that focus on one or two characters or on a set subject - pretty much those with an established plot line and a definite direction. Nothing hurts more than to be halfway through a story and then have to give up on it because you don't know where to go with it.

There are really no stories that I will absolutely NOT touch, but I am not at all a fan of deep romance or anger fanfictions or stories. These have just never been my subject (which is why none of my stories to date have any romantic affiliation with them). In all honesty, I'd rather not beta romance stories or those with plots of pain toward others - whether it is my belief that these things in real life should only be present before God or that it simply bothers me, I'd just prefer not to beta them.
