Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I have been a beta-reader for a little over three years now, for friends and companions. I am very proficient in grammar of the English language, to almost an archaic form. I tend to use British-English grammar and spellings, but I will beta from an American stand point. Though I am used to proofreading stories for just grammar and spelling mistakes, I also like to held edit to make prose flow better. If you ask me to read something you wrote, please let me know if you want a little extra help and criticism with your story, and I will be happy to assist. Even if you want to bounce ideas off me for upcoming chapters, I am more than willing to help you with any parts you are struggling with.
When I beta-read, I will note on the story the corrections made, so you can see the differences. I know this sounds a little English-teacher-ish, but this has helped others I have proofread for, as for a lot of them, English was their second language.
My expectations of anyone that seeks my help is not only to advise me of how much help you want, but also to be upfront regarding what kind of story you are writing.
As I do have preferences on what I read (such as pairings, slash, etc), I just want honesty on where the story is leading. I will beta all sorts of fanfiction, but I would just like to know what I'm getting into first. I am more than happy to assist with multi-chapter fanfiction, and I don't mind staying on for longer projects. And just to be clear, I am willing and happy to help writers with English as a second language. As stated before, I have helped several others with this area. If you want to discuss your story over an instant messaging platform or email, I will be happy to set up times to have conversations. As stated before, I'd be ecstatic to be involved on the actual story, not just the proofreading. I look forward to assisting anyone who needs the help. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My strengths lie in the grammar and spellings of the English language. I have an English-teacher feel to my proofreading, but I try not to be too annoying with it. I like to be involved in critiques because I like to help other writers grow in their literature. I do better with fandoms I am accustomed to, but if I don't know the world, I'm quick to learn it so I can be more proficient at proofreading the story, to find errors other than spelling mistakes. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I have a hard time keeping my opinions back. If you are not looking for a critique along with the beta, my help would probably not be the best. I also can come across as harsh sometimes, though it is not my intention to be cruel, just helpful. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
My preferred fandoms lie in anime and manga. When it comes to pairings, please note that I much prefer yaoi/slash and yuri/femslash couples to het/straight couples. Though I will proofread for het, I don't really like to, hence why I ask for honesty regarding to the contents of your story. I prefer longer stories, as I don't mind staying on for multiple chapter fanfictions. I also like storied that range into a more 'mature' area, but I will happily read stories with a 'lighter' feel to them.
I try to stay within fandoms I am familiar with, which mostly falls in anime and manga. Of course, I don't know every show and comic there is, so please tell me what we're working with, and I'll let you know if I am able to be of assistance. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I really do not like het/straight. As stated, I will do proofreading for het, just not happily. I also do not like the movie genre, for various reasons. |
