Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Though I am considered quite young, I have been writing for many many years. Beyond fan fiction, I have been published on other fiction publishing websites and several times in a local annual of poetry and fiction (for my work that is more on the poetic side). As a beta-reader, I feel that I can lend my services to those who consider writing something they do either seriously or as a hobby, because I think writing is something everyone can do and it is something everyone can stand to be better at. Since grammar seems to become increasingly important to me as I grow older, I have begun to read critically with an eye for grammatical mistakes. I feel that, to be an effective writer, one must understand the language you are writing it. But, god, I sound stuffy. I enjoy reading basically everything! That's why I love fanfiction.net. It's such a wonderful community for like-minded people. And I think anyone who would want my services as a beta-reader would not be dissapointed. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I feel I have a very modern perspective when it comes to criticism or reading. I can understand many points of view, which comes from years and years of reading not only the canon, but a wider array of novels and plays. I can honestly say my strengths are interpreting a range of different writing styles and offering critique accordingly. My strenghths in writing have grown since I've reguarly began exercising them. And I'm sure that, with the more beta-reading I encounter, my strengths will also continue to grow. So, strengths: understanding, encouragement, grammar, characterization and understanding characters without a lot of knowledge. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Weaknesses, for me, are hard to distinguish. I would have to say, in all honesty, my main weakness would be my lack of assertion when it comes to critique, though I can be harsh when my suggestions aren't listened to. I can also become hostile in these situations, when provoked. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I would prefer to beta stories stemming from things I know or have written about myself (i.e. Harry Potter, Dexter, Molly Black novels, Pirates of the Caribbean). I also have extensive knowledge of the following: BOOKS: Aldous Huxley (primarily, Brave New World [favorite!]), Blood and Chocolate, Blue is For Nightmares (and others in the series), Fairy Tales, Gossip Girl, Greek Mythology, Harry Potter, Jane Austen (primarily Pride & Prejudice), Series of Unfortunate Events, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Uglies (but not Pretties or Specials), Wicked. MOVIES: Across the Universe, Alice in Wonderland, Amelie, Breakfast Club, Cruel Intentions, Edward Scissorhands, Enchanted, Hairspray, High School Musical, Little Mermaid, Mean Girls, Moulin Rouge, Pirates of the Caribbean, Sweeney Todd, Wanted
TV SHOWS: CSI: Las Vegas (and Las Vegas ONLY), Dexter, Gilmore Girls, Gossip Girl, The Office, ScrubsI'm still on the fence with MISC stories or crossovers. And may I add, I'm open to stories that still do not have official categories on the website, such as the TV show Weeds or the book The Time Traveler's Wife. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I really would not betaread anything in the Anime, Games, Cartoons or Comics, just because I don't know a single thing about any of it. So I could not begin to betaread anything of the sort. |
