Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Well I am a university student currently doing a BA in creative writing and languages, so I will have commitments of my own and assignments to hand up. However, I will message you back if I'm currently not taking any requests, or if I simply need a bit of time to complete whatever it is I need to complete before tackling your story.I will give your story a fair chance, and offer ways and suggestions on how to improve it but I will never take your writer's voice away from you. In the document I will send back to you I will let it be known what parts I have edited or where I have suggested ideas you could add, but it's completely up to you to take them on board or not. I am also bisexual, so I have no judgments against straight/hentai, lesbian/yuri, or gay/yaoi. Although please bare in mind that I am a university student and a little bit of a slow reader, so if I suspect reviewing and editing a chapter will take longer than necessary, I will message you, but I will not abandon your work once I accepted to beta for you. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
Character development is my strongest point. Often when I create new characters, I have planned out what I want done with them, such as their appearance, any disabilities (either mental or physical) that they were either born with or develops over time, how I want their story arc to play out, and whether or not if I want them alive or dead by the end of the story. My characters all have distinct personalities of their own that has either developed over time, or as my stories have progressed, and I would be more than happy to help you develop your own original character's personality. Aside from this, I can also help you in regards to discerning whether or not a character is in character or out-of-character, if the fandom is something I'm familiar with.My second strongest point is description. I believe that an excellent story is when the author shows, instead of tells. Cliche, I know, but it doesn't make it any less true. However, there will be times where the author simply needs to let the reader use their imagination, because let's face it, authors have limited control over what the reader imagines anyway. I can also help you with imaginative scenes and descriptions of physical feelings and emotions the characters' have. Lastly I can also help you with plot points or plot twists, and brainstorming ideas from how to get to Point A to Point D. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
The weaknesses of mine includes spelling, grammar and the fact that I'm a slow reader. You could add procrastinator to the list if you wanted to, however I tend to get things done when other people are depending on me for things that I've accepted, or otherwise required of me. While I'm not horrible at spelling and punctuation, I actually think I'm pretty reasonable at it, I probably can't help you edit the structure of your story beyond the basics. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Beyond character development for original characters, and helping to describe scenes, feelings and emotion, I would prefer to advise you in fandoms that I am familiar with. Besides all that I can help you with the action, adventure, fantasy, horror, friendship and romance.I would also prefer that you message me a basic plot summery for your story (or what your story is about if there is no intended plot). |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I'm not comfortable with beta-ing any sort of sexual content. While I have nothing against reading them, it would just feel strange and uncomfortable about it if I was asked to edit them. |
