Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I'm actively writing in the Harry Potter universe. I'm a native English speaker, and I work as a library director. While I can't write as well as I would like, I can provide help for guiding a story to a satisfying conclusion. I would prefer to Beta stories that have a direction; if you don't know where the story is going, I can't help you reach it. /br /br /br / br /br / br / br /br / br / OTOH, if you have an idea and need help fleshing it out, I can help with that too - it's just a different approach. Tell me when you contact me what kind of assistance you're looking for. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I read quickly, compulsively, and constantly. (Library director, remember?) I can adjust my comments to the scope and type of story that you are trying to tell, from epic beat-down (both Western and Oriental conclusions) to slice-of-life pastoral scenes. I'm not going to catch *all* of the typos, but I'll get a good fraction of them. And I'll adjust my nitpicking to the level of canon compliance you want - if you are looking to check against canon, I'll help with that, too. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My work schedule does not let me have multiple turn-arounds in a day. Sorry, but I also have a real life. And I seriously prefer someone who is committed to finishing their work - way too many unfinished stories have been abandoned here. I hate that. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Personally, I think that JKR blew it when she introduced both the Horcruxes *and* the Deathly Hallows - they were both clear failures of imagination. (Doing it right would have used *only* the plot and world building elements from the first three to five books to resolve the story. The Horcrux description doesn't match with the way that the Diary was shown, and the Deathly Hallows description doesn't work the way that the wand and the cloak were shown. Obviously, these were later, not-well-thought-out additions.) Any stories that 'fix' canon in that way would be *really* appreciated! |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
High levels of sensuality and erotica. My wife likes that I focus that attention on her, and I'm not going to change that for an author. If you have a compelling story to tell, it will work without the explicit scenes, and will be stronger for it. If it *won't* work without the smut, then your story isn't as good as you think. br /br /br / br /br / br / br /br / br / And if you don't want to deal with the emotional development of your characters, you need to find somebody else for your Beta. That's the entire reason I like Fic, so I'm going to push authors in that direction. |
