As a beta-reader my main goal is to help the author make the plot and characters of the story as believable and accurate as possible. I help authors steer clear of Mary-sues and cliches, unless of course that is what the writer is trying to accomplish. Someone who asks for my help can expect to hear "Why?" quite a bit. I do this only to make sure the writer has his/hers ideas flushed out enough. I find this helps a lot when it comes to avoiding Mary-sues and stories that have a different effect on the reader than the author was going for.

As mentioned I am very good at helping authors flush out their ideas into full plots and fully developed and deep characters. I am very good at making sure the story makes sense and wont be confusing to the reader. I am also quite good at correcting grammar errors.

I tend to overlook spelling errors, but I read and reread pieces multiple times in order to ensure that I have helped my authors to the best of my abilities. If the story is about a subject I am not familiar with then my beta-ing will not be as strong. I will try to help any author with any story if they ask, but I make it clear that my knowledge of characters may not as strong as it could be.

I love to work on time period specific pieces because I have a very large historical background and have a very keen eye for detail and accuracy. Video games and comics are another strong suit of mine. It pretty much is a case to case basis. I know a lot about certain television shows, certain movies, certain video games, certain books, and certain comics. The categories that I can offer the most assistance in are listed under my preferences. I try to be accommodating and I will study up on the topic as much as possible to be able to help the authors.

I prefer not to work on high fantasy pieces because I am not very familiar with the genre and I would not be good at helping the author in setting up characters or plots. I also would prefer not to work on crossover pieces because I am generally not a fan of those kinds of works and wouldn't know how to help.
