Hi! My name is Mila! I am an English major and Spanish minor, hoping to work in editing/publishing. I currently work in my university's writing center, so I have experience with writing consulting. My betareading style is a mix of appreciative consulting and good old-fashioned editing. Basically, I will read through, make notes, ask questions of you, and make suggestions or changes that I feel are for the better. My only request of you is to simply be open to my advice. I don't necessarily expect you to make every change I suggest, but at least consider it. I also generally ask authors for three things: how they would like to receive feedback (whether its e-mail, Google docs, etc.), what type of feedback they would like to receive (what they are concerned/struggling with in regard to the paper), and when they would like me to start. I have strong writing skills in general, but specifically in the areas of grammar and word choice. My knowledge of grammar principles is extensive, and I have a wide range of vocabulary to pull from. Additionally, organization and character development are two areas of fictional writing that I love to work with. Finally, I am a Spanish minor and am proficient. I am able to review Spanish drafts and help with translations, if necessary.

My weakness as a betareader is dealing with the writer's voice. I think voice is a really important element of the story and changing that alters the entire message of the story. However, I will try my best to stay as true as possible to the writer's voice and not suggest changes that will alter the tone of the narrative. My biggest weakness as a writer is introductory material. It is sometimes difficult for me to write introductions, as I am so excited about the story material I want to just jump right into the narrative. However, I am currently working on improving the way I draft and write stories so that introductions become easier.

While I do not have preferences on the types of stories I'd like to beta, romance and fantasy are my areas of expertise. However, I am comfortable and willing to beta stories of other genres. I am comfortable reviewing manuscripts with any rating. I'm not afraid of language or sexual detail :).

Fortunately, there are a lot of areas/fandoms I find interesting and know a lot about. Unfortunately, there are also a lot of subjects that I am unfamiliar with. The only stories I will not betaread are stories that deal with concepts, subjects, fandoms that I am not familiar with.
