Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I am best suited to being treated like an editor and storyboard consultant. I will make certain that any work I'm involved in is predominantly typo-free (to the point where I would read the entire piece several times over to correct typos) and mentally stimulating to readers. I function best where I am given a chapter to preview/review and give detailed feedback within about 24 hours of the author submitting new material to me. I expect authors I work with to be open to constructive criticism (even going so far as to question how I arrived at certain conclusions about their story so they understand where I'm coming from) as well as being able to stand up to me and say that 'this is where the story is going Mr. Editor, Deal With It!'. At which point, I will respect the will of the author and aid them to the best of my abilities. (As this is not a for-profit area of the world, having to deal with publishing a story that won't sell isn't an issue, thus the freedom I am giving the author to tell me just that.) Overall, I am an easy guy to work with so long as the author gives me some leeway, which I willingly return in kind so that we can work well as a team together to create the best story possible. I look forward to working with you, prospective client! |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I am a stickler for details and continuity within the context of the individual story, as well as integrity of the established characters therein. (If they aren't acting according to what you've established them capable of doing, then you'd likely need a good explanation to convince me of how this character suddenly pulled a rabbit out of their hat that seemingly has no place being there in the first place.) I HAVE beta'ed epic-length stories in the past and can work on a regular schedule as set down by the author and can respond promptly to any new material and serve as a great sounding board for potential story ideas. When I find a project that interests me, I am all ears and very interested in being as involved as possible. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I personally lack the drive to WRITE epic-scale stories that contain hundreds of thousands of words and sometimes hundreds of chapters. However, when someone else is doing the writing, I have no problems keeping pace. I also tend to gravitate towards pairings I personally agree more with, but I have recently made the mental leap into considering many stories alternate universe-style interpretations of the source material and have since opened up my mind to the possibility of many different pairings and the circumstances under which said pairings would potentially thrive. Another weakness I have is the tendency to think about ways the story could move and suggesting as much to the author. If you want me as a beta, you should be aware that I might drop a suggestion for where the story COULD go. However, I respect that this is YOUR story and should you veto one of my ideas, I will not be offended and simply not bring up the subject again. Communication is important here, so be aware that PMs and IMs are likely to be numerous. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Stories that will potentially last many chapters and be epic-scale stories. However, I am not without my love of shorter stories and can appreciate them equally well. I also greatly enjoy talking out details about the story and having in-depth discussions about the characters and the plotlines of stories that interest me. Expect some very long PMs and IM conversations to come out of my being a beta reader. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Stories that feature pairings that have little or no basis, stories that contain only around 1,000 words per chapter (unless the author has a James Patterson stlye of writing where they have hundreds of chapters and each chapter is only several paragraphs long), and while I know this may sound prejudiced, I would appreciate no requests to beta Yaoi fanfics. I tried wrapping my head around them WAY back when Gundam Wing was still the predominant source of Yaoi fanfics on ff.net and I simply couldn't get into them. (I don't say this lightly, but I did honestly try.) I respect the lifestyle choices made by other people and would never judge them unfairly because of who they choose to love, I simply have no inclination to read about such things. |
