As a Beta Reader I would be helpful first and friendly second. While some people are afraid to criticise I won't be. I will set out from the off to make your story 'better', and not tell you that you're perfect. No writer is perfect, and anyone that thinks they are or tells you so it kidding themselves. Authors are professionals, but even they aren't perfect - and these are people with whole teams working alonside them to produce a finished product. br /br /

What I really want is passion. I don't expect a high standard of work (to begin with), but I do expect you to work. Give me a chapter, when you can, and I will return it within a few days with notes, criticisms, ideas and suggestions. I will want to hear the essence of your story. A snynopsis or overall idea of the story arc will do. After that I would like to see a first chapter or opening of around 1,000 words (minimum, don't worry if it's over by any amount). I don't mind if it's a story already in progress, but changing an antire story from scratch is easier to work /

From this I can assess you as a writer, and whether your story is something I would like to work with. Often this may have nothing to do with you as a writer, and I will tell you so, but if (as of course a lot of fanfiction is) the story is attached to a franchise I'm not familiar with then my involvement will not be as great as it could be, and I would encourage you to find another Beta Reader who can better assist you.

As a beta reader I like to focus first on a writer's strengths, because it's better to start out with what you're doing right, rather than what you're doing wrong. After that, though, you're mine. I have a strong focus on grammar and punctuation to begin with, as I find these are often the most glaring errors. After that I will help you not only to piece your story together coherently but enhance it through all available avenues.

I can show you how to correctly format your story (because appearing professional is almost as good as being it). This means putting your words and sentences into a better image that makes it easier to read, and makes sense e.g. paragraphs and speaking /br /

Punctuation: This means correct punctuation when a character is speaking, with speech tags or actions that properly enhance your storytelling. It also means using commas, dashes, full-stops at the right times and places in order to break your sentences into easy chunks so as to assist with /br /

br /

br /br /

Grammar: I will tell you when your words or sentences don't make sense. Once I'm through with them they'll be sentences that the eye floats over, rather than struggles through like a pool of /br /

br /

br /br /

br /

Syntax: This means the order or arrangement of the words within a sentence. Sometimes a sentence can be improved by swapping over two words, or two clauses within a sentence, and other times this means re-arranging the entire construct in order to provide you with a better sentence.

I'm very good at technical enhancements or improvements, but what I really want to work on is story/character development. This is where back-and-forth dialogue between the author and I will be essential. If you're struggling with certain aspects of your story, and not just your storytelling, I would be thrilled to talk them over with you and offer advice. Whether it be suggestions on how they look or speak, or how they go from being the story's main villain to it's only hero. /br /

Structuring stories is often a very difficult aspect, something I struggle with myself. I have found that using visual aids can help, such as post-it notes stuck to a wall - or chapter planning. I can offer advice, help, and perhaps even offer documents or ideas of templates/plans to use.

I have no preferences in terms of content - as long as I see merit in your story. We're all after drama at the end of the day, whether it be the falling-out between a parent and child, or the chaos of all-out war between factions and the rising or falling of a hero or villain. I am just hungry for a good story.

Twilight. I don't mind fluff stories as long as they're well-written, and show promise or talent. Otherwise my digital door is open to anyting and everything.
