Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
When I read anything, a story, a memo, business letter or sales ad, I find myself critiquing grammar and spelling. No matter the content, if the basics are not met, it detracts from what the writer is trying to convey to his/her readers. I've read several stories that have had wonderful potential in terms of creativity but dropped them because the sentence structure was just so bad that the resolution to the conflict presented in the story didn't matter to me any longer. br /br /br /br /br / br /br / br / br /br /br / br / br /br / br / br /br /br /br / br / br /br / br / br /br /br / br / br /br / br / I never edit for content. What you write is your decision. However, if I change something in a way that I feel conveys something other than what I think you were going for, I will highlight it and ask your opinion regarding the change, otherwise the changes I will make are probably so small, you won't really notice them. In this light, I do recommend you always keep the original copy of whatever you send me in a separate file so you can compare and contrast when you get my work back just to make sure we are on the same page, so to speak. This is very important for the first few works you send until we get to know one another and in case my latest shipment of Windex is delayed for whatever reason. ;) |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My Thesaurus is my best friend. While I know most authors tend to have that one line they use in just about every story they write, something like "Johnny was excited to find his lost puppy. In his excitement, his tripped over the corner of the rug and face planted into the corner of the coffee table." is just too "exciting" for me, if you catch my drift. I keep an eye out for key words that are perhaps used too often will change them to enhance the feel of the paragraph or page. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Well, I'm human. I can get so caught up in a story that no matter how many times I read it, I will miss something that is blatantly obvious. I chalk it up to my mind filling in the blanks on its way to finding out what the hell happens next! I combat this by first reading the story for enjoyment. The second pass through is when I do the major editing and then I read it a third time to ferret out whatever I may have missed the first two times. I will read longer submissions four and five times to try to ensure I haven't missed anything, but again - human. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I don't really have a preference, per se. If I had to choose, I seems to be drawn more to the "angst" and "hurt/comfort" fics than anything else. Happily ever after is not a requirement and sometimes, not preferred. In some fandoms, I prefer slash over the expected hetero couplings, so I am not against that at all. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I will beta whatever you choose to write, but I am not a fan of sci/fi and therefore do not think I could offer anything constructive in that genre of fiction other than the basics. |
