Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I read mostly for pleasure and for analytical purposes. I wouldn't say that I have high standards, I'm just picky. If the grammar is choppy, the mechanics of your world feels forced, or if the confines of your story are rigidly set in the rules of whatever video game you write about I probably won't read it. I prefer a sense of Imagination and Wit when someone is writing. When you are able to take the world that you love and make it your own that is when I'm interested. Me personally, I like to read and write the same way. If it's not descriptive, imaginative, and fun then I just don't feel like wasting my time.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I excel at imagining or visualizing the setting before me, it's one of the reasons I like imaginative or engaging stories is because I feel like I'm right there alongside the protagonist. Don't take it personally if I critique a bunch though, because my style is that of veiled compliments. I will tell you what you're doing right, but I'm not going to hide the flaws of any story. I believe for anyone to grow as a writer, they need advice and then they need to flourish on their own, if you hang on every word of someone else, it soon becomes their story not yours. You've got to do your own thing.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
My weakness is that I am a tad bit...neurotic. If something isn't as it should be to me I'll either try to fix it or I'll obsess over it. I tend to lose sleep over my own stories if they're not going where I want which is why I try to engage my readers and get their opinion, but that doesn't always work. I get lost in my own head (not in an egotistical way more like a deep process of multiple thoughts and ideas.) and that inhibits me from getting anything done because I end up over-analyzing. So in short you could say I try to be a perfectionist even though that is humanly unattainable.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I prefer a good romance, a drama, or some action. If I read a story that says adventure, I expect it to be such. The reason I read Fable over anything else is because it is a story of growth, or struggles and trials, and for those who haven't played the first Fable I advise you go out and buy Fable: Anniversary when it comes out...because I intend to and I swear I will get every achievement. If it's a romance, it'd better feel real as I watch two characters realize their love for each other and grow in a way that they come to be together. A good example of it to me is Bishou no Marina's story "My Other Name" That is my preferred...I'm not saying I'm expecting every story to be utter poetry and perfection, I just want it to feel real and emotional. In short...I prefer something real...Horror better be scary or gory, Romance better be tender and romantic, Adventure better be adventurous...nuff said. (Also don't ruin good established ships...they're beautiful and you should feel bad for ruining a relationship!...jk)
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Comedy...I love humor in a story as the Heroes are having a laugh or just being entertaining, but a story geared towards parodying something I like is just boring to me. I have abridged series for that. I don't like stories where the authors character is God in a handbasket. People, no matter how powerful must have a flaw it is integral for the development of a story. If you write a character that is extremely over-powered with no real flaw then I won't be too pleased. In the words of the most flawed, but loved human being Dean Winchester, "If it bleeds, we can kill it." That is the fact of life...If anything feels forced or animatronic I just won't read it...I'll go through one chapter. I like to read anime, but I have preferences on what I will read. I prefer to watch it as it tells a story than read it.
