Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
At this point in time, I love reading fairy tale and myth based stories, fantasy, especially Jim Henson's Labyrinth, and Disney. I would prefer not to beta stories from fandoms I'm not familiar with, simply because I wouldn't be a good judge of whether or not everyone is in character. If I beta-read your story, you'll get a critique of sorts where I'll go through, paragraph by paragraph, touching on grammar, spelling, details, characterization, dialog, etc. I try to keep an even balance, both pointing out what could be changed, as well as finding the author's strong points and helping them use those to the best of their advantage. I also like to mix it up with a little humor, so expect some goofing around in my critiques. Please note that like you, I have a busy schedule, and while I would love to help everyone who asks, I may not always have time. I will always respect you and your work, and I ask that same respect for me and my time in return. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I'm very good at descriptive writing, and setting a mood. Basically show, don't tell. I have a lot of fun helping others cultivate this. I also have a good grasp of grammar and spelling. While I'm not a "Grammar Nazi," I will be quick to point out errors in that area. I put a lot of thought into how to make characters and their actions and emotions believable. I can also help with varying sentence structure and the over use of words. I'm also good at keeping the language consistent with the time period. Nothing is more irritating than reading things like "cool" and "What's up?" in a medieval story. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I said above that I have a good grasp of grammar, which is true. However, I have a tendency to let somethings slide, such as run-on sentences, as I think sometimes they flow better. See? I'm pretty sure that last sentence was a run-on. I tend to use commas to excess and semi colons? What are semi colons? My point is, If you're looking for someone to go through your story with a fine toothed grammar comb, you may want to find someone else. I'm very detail oriented, and can get nitpicky. I never mean it in a mean way, and as I said before, I try to keep a balance between what I like about what's been written and what needs changing, but keep that in mind. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I love the cute, cozy, fuffity, romantic stuff, so give me all you've got! Humor, family and couple dynamics, mystery, fantasy, and sci-fi are all wonderful fun! I'll beta K though T, so long as suggestive themes are kept to a minimum. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
No smut or cursing please. Light suggestive banter or illusions between married couples is fine, but I don't want any details. |
