Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I suppose the best thing would be to say something about myself. I'm a 14-year old American girl who lives in Maryland. My dad's a scientist and programmer, my mom's a drawing teacher. I'm a pretty fast reader; my record for reading would probably be The Mark of Athena from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm on a school day/br /br / br /br / br / I'll read anything. My room is stacked with fiction, history (mostly recent), and human biology. I spend half my time reading, a quarter of my time thinking about what I read, and the rest of my time making theories. I love writing, particularly with pencil. Typing just isn't the /br / br / br /br / br / I've done a lot of activities. Now, I draw, do ballet, play violin, program, and do Martial Arts. I speak English and Chinese and am learning French. I've tried gymnastics, swimming, and badminton, and learned skating until /br / br / br /br / br / For more information, go to my profile, read it, look at my favorites, and read my fanfic. |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
In general, I can point out grammar mistakes, style problems, word overusage, and plot flaws. I'm pretty good at catching mistakes, and getting facts right is very important to me. Descriptions of physical things are my strength. When I beta, I generally read through the whole thing once to get the gist, and then pick through for mistakes twice. While I can use DocX, I prefer Word because of its Track Changes, allowing me to correct it with a virtual red pen. And I love covering pages with red. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm not good at portraying emotion at all. Some of my suggestions will be colored by my own opinion; you should never take all of them without considering them. Keep in mind that I'll see things from a mature-ish 14 year old's perspective. As to culture, I've only lived in America, so I can't Brit-pick or anything like that. I know a bit about China because my parents are from there, but that's it, and I definitely don't keep up much with modern society. I personally think my biggest problem is that, if I don't know you well, I'll restrain my editing and be less harsh because I have a strange problem where I don't want to hurt feelings. Weird, I know. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Nope, no special preferences. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
I won't refuse to beta-read anything, but I will probably try to change stories with my pet-peeves. I don't like romance, for instance, so if you asked me to beta-read a romance-centered story with a plot I considered stupid, I would try to add in subplots. |
