Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
Bio: (Most of the information as to my expectations can be found in the "Don't Like" section below. I'll endeavor to keep that as up-to-date as I possibly can, so you have the most accurate information you can.) I believe the purpose of a beta-reader is to help overcome cases of writer's block and to catch possible errors before a chapter is posted, whether that be a continuity error, a typo, or something else. To that end, my "style" for beta-reading consists of helping the author stay on track with the plot, and catching errors before the chapter hosting them is posted.
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I tend to focus all of my energies on a few projects at a time, which means if I beta a fic, I'll only be beta-ing that one fic until the author gets tired of me or the story is finished. I also nitpick. Everything. Grammar, details, continuity... To an extent, that can be a good thing.
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I nitpick. Everything. Grammar, details, continuity... Past a certain point, that can be a bad thing.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
I prefer it when the author actually has a plot in mind when they begin writing. In terms of fandoms, I prefer Harry Potter, Stargate, and Mass Effect over almost anything else. Other than that, see below.
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Deal-breakers (Updated 12/25/17): 1. I absolutely refuse to read anything Twilight or similar. Any book that has portions that someone might mistake for an account of being raped, AND GLORIFY THE SEXUAL PREDATOR, should not be considered entertainment, and I will, under no circumstances, aid and abet the expansion of "fandoms" idealizing such "works." 2. I also won't beta citrus stories, or stories with lots of citrus scenes. 3. My biggest pet peeve of any story, aside from my ethical objections, is the "Sue" character archetype. If your story has a Sue, you need to get rid of them. If your protagonist is a Sue, have a good day. 4. My second biggest pet peeve is fics that don't have direction. If you don't know where your story is supposed to be going, you should try and figure that out. That alone isn't the deal breaker for me. The deal breaker here is a refusal to find a direction for your story.
