First, I'll read the story through once or twice, and note my initial impressions. What mood did you go for versus what I ended up feeling? Did I react to character decisions? Was I tempted to drop it at any point, and did I go ahead and drop it anyways? Questions about the fic as a whole, in other words. When I'm writing a story, I write outlines, and then write my stories to that outline. As a beta reader, I do this in reverse - I boil your story down to an outline and check for logical plotting and continuity. Once I've read your story through for Step One, I'll use what I learned reading your story to outline out what, exactly, happened in it. Finally, I'll divide your story up according to the outline, and read the corresponding chunks more closely, with an eye for what I'd change - both in the outline and in how you write according to it.

I have an eye for how action is written and paced in a story. If your action scene is putting me to sleep, I will let you know. If I have no clue who's fighting who, or who's where at what time, I may have a fix for you. This goes for any sort of action. Dogfights, shootouts, lightsaber duels, anything!

I suck at teaching, so bear with me. I don't do many "how to improve" tips, I just give a review and let you alter accordingly. Also, romance scenes are neither my strength nor my cup of tea. If I'm shipping, I'm completely out of my element.

Action and suspense. I want to see characters take on their opponents head-on, and fight one another in creative, unique fashions. Don't mistake "creative" or "unique" for "gimmicky shit tacked on for its own sake", though - a good sword fight is a good sword fight without the pointless addition of squirt guns! I also happen to like crossovers. What would happen if such and such happened to suck Character A into Universe B? I'm the guy that wants to find out. Well-thought-out crossovers, while AU by their very nature, can easily bring plot strengths and weaknesses into each other's light.

Shipping stories. A little romance between cast members is alright, even expected in some situations. If, however, your fic exists primarily so characters A and B can hook up, count me out of it.
