Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I read words closely, but grammar isn't what sticks out for me. The most important thing that comes to my mind is how a phrase comes out and if it makes sense (Which I guess is a little like grammar, so I kinda lied.) I read through a chapter, enjoy the content, and then read through again in order to better understand what may be going on on a deeper level (There usually is one, even if it is an unconscious reaction). No one's perfect and I don't expect anyone to be. I just like to read and write fanfiction and would like to be able to personally help others go through their stories, and finish them. I read too many stories that stay unfinished, I myself am quite unable to bring myself to honestly finish an entire story, either because I don't feel I'm appreciated enough or I don't get enough people to comment honestly on my work. The only thing I ask when I read and critique is that you take my words in stride, I can be blunt. I don't flame, ever, but I will tell you if there's a blatant mistake in continuity, wording, or if the plot is a little droll (That last part won't be as blunt, I assure you, I'm actually a nice guy.) |
My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
My best strength in this is that I'm actually in college getting a degree in Creative Writing. Unlike other writers and readers that I know of, I like reading fanfiction over reading real fiction and I like writing both kinds. I'm a man of fantasy or science-fiction when I write and read, and I love good drama. I wish I could write good drama, but unfortunately action/adventure and romance is my main thing. Romance without drama isn't great, but it does happen and can work out fairly well. My best skill is that, I think, I try to be kind. I honestly won't ever say "You should give up writing." I'll probably say "You need to write a few drafts before you publish this. Try again, and let me know if you want me to read it." Best ways to explain myself, the more writers there are, the more competition there is, and the better the quality of writing and storytelling will occur. Makes sense to me anyways. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I ramble, a lot. I may lose focus on the main thing and if I do, forgive me, it's the only way I get to communicate (I hate talking :P). I may read through the story and think to myself, 'Hmm, this might be more interesting if this character did this,' however, if you don't want me doing that I won't write it out and tell you what should be done. It's your story after all. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Romance, Action/Adventure, Drama, and Comedy. I love comedy, and I will tell you if there is a line that makes me laugh out loud or if I just smile or chuckle a bit. I'm easy to make laugh, but if I have to stop reading for a good 10 seconds or more, I'll let you know. It's funny, really. Other than that, I think I can deal with any kind of anime or game or comic or...thing that you throw at me, I'll just do a little research if I don't know it. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Angst, or depressing things. Stuff like that gets me down, and I probably won't want to continue. Sorry, I just won't be able to finish and give you the beta read that you deserve. If you're willing to try me anyways, I'll force myself to finish and give you an idea of what's up with the chapter, but beyond that, I will probably ask you not to continue using me as a beta reader. No offense meant, I just like happy thoughts over sad ones. |
