Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I read quite frequently, and my preference is a large assortment of things. I like to consider myself good at catching grammar and spelling mistakes, as well as helping out with story plot and character development. I am the kind of person who can simply comb through your story for grammatical errors, or give you advice about how your characters are or how the story should go. If you want it, I can give you my input on how the story is going and can give helpful tips as far as plot. I may ask questions like, "Why does a character act this way?" or, "How is this relevant in the plot later?" I am critical when it comes to character behavior, and can flat out tell you if a character is Out of Character (OOC). I can edit any submissions, help with plot, story flow, character development, etc. I can correct grammar, punctuation and spelling. If you only require help in certain fields, I can be of service.I am partial to horror movies from the 80's and under. I also enjoy traditional vampire stories, movies, etc., this does NOT include Twilight. I am also VERY fond of Beetlejuice and other Tim Burton works. That was my childhood. My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
I enjoy writing thriller genre, or things that are just a tad taste macabre. Angst, romance, mystery, horror, action, and descriptive writing are my forte. I love to write the gritty things, the things people often shy away from. Blood and guts, death, fornication, the shocking and creepy.I have a vast knowledge of horror movies, particularly the older ones. Everything from the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, to Psycho, from The Brain that Wouldn't Die to A Nightmare on Elm Street, and from Evil Dead to Cannibal Holocaust. If it's old, I've probably seen it, and know quite a bit about it. I am a collector of horror films and a walking encyclopedia on them. |
My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
Alas, I am not perfect, and none of us are. Therefore, I cannot guarantee your final copy will be spotless, as no one rightly can, we are only human but I comb through things very well, and try not to miss things.I also am a bit blunt about my comments. If I find something is off with a character, I will tell you so immediately. Sometimes it is needed to have it told straight and not sugar-coated. If multiple attempts to help you go unheard, and mistakes repeated, I will tell you so right away, so try not to get your feelings hurt if I bash your character. |
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Most horror-based movies I can do, without problem. I like horror, but am not limited to this genre. I am also fond of beta-reading action and romance as well and many others.Unlike many people on this site, I am open and encourage Original Characters. I can pick them apart and help clean up any "Mary-Sue" syndromes they might have. I enjoy reading OCs, so please let me see how well created yours is. Creating characters are fun and can create interesting prospects in the story, however, I am very anal about whether your character is too perfect, so be warned that I will tell you if you should just scrap the character and start over. I can help you shape them into believable roles that are not bland, one-dimensional emotionless Zombies. I like to read romance fics, as long as they aren't too sappy and fluffy. I like realistic relationships, not two characters who previously hated each other all of a sudden realizing their true love and going at it at the kitchen table within one chapter. That being said, I have another thing I am perfectly okay with: Graphic and or explicit content. I know many people on this site cringe when writing death scenes, bloody scenes, rape, abuse and sex. I however, realize that betas for this material are therefore scarce, and I have no qualms for helping write it. You can show me something as explicit and dirty as you want and I won't bat an eye, within reason. Sex scenes I can do just fine, whether you prefer brief encounters, or long, heated romps. Don't be afraid to approach me with these things. |
Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
With all that being added, there are a few definite things I will refuse to write. I will not write anything that has to do with SLASH, in other words, gay relationships. I don't write it, nor read it. There are plenty of Betas out there for that crap anyway, and I find that finding a beta for STRAIGHT couples is not as easy, for some inexplicable reason.I also won't help with incestuous relationships-and I don't meant if it's a case of family abuse, I mean to consenting siblings wanting to hump each other. There are also certain pairings that I will not do. I will NOT do HermionexSnape fics. Period. Nor will I do GinnyxSnape. I find both these pairings sickening, and prefer usually to help with SnapexOC stories. I should also make a note that I don't do Yuri either, or lesbianism. Go find someone else for this mess. I won't touch anything Twilight related. Ever. |
