I proofread for typing mistakes, grammar mistakes and other inconsistencies in the flow of a story, but will in most cases not alter the way a story is written to any substantial extent unless asked to. I will also try to keep a dialogue with the author in the case of there being larger consistency flaws where it is not immediately obvious where the intentions of the author lay when writing.

Grammar, spelling, and correcting it, and smoothing out inconsistencies are my main strengths when reviewing others' works.

Indecision when it comes to editing which might contradict the author's intentions, seeing as I cannot allways glean these from the text on its own.

Adventures and action based stories are my favourites, both to read and write, and thus also to beta read.

Too much romance would likely have me balk, but in most cases it depends on how it is aproached, and how the story as a whole is written. If asked I would most likely try next to any story before giving it a definite no.
