as a beta i like to think of my job as the one who helps you look at your writing in a different way. that's the point behind revision, after all; taking a new perspective to find the weak spots and places that need improvement. i endeavor at all times to be honest. if something makes no sense, i will say so, but i will do it in a non-asshole way, because i know a harsh critique is a gut check to the self esteem. what i ask of someone asking me to beta their work is this: have patience with me. know that you don't have to take every single suggestion i make. this works best if it's an open forum, where i give feedback, and if you don't think that's right, tell me why so i can know better where you want to go with it, and tailor my advice to your needs. also, be aware that i may not be able to get to your piece right away, or it may take me a bit to give you a response. i'd rather take my time and give you something thoughtful.

my main strength is that, being a biochemistry major / huge nerd, i have a slightly more scientific approach to things than many others. i can give you a advice on how to make science fiction make more sense and be more realistic. i also lean more toward simple, clean writing, so i'll be able to point out of something gets busy or rushed or nonsensical pretty well. additionally, though i'm no expert at written english grammar, i'm kind of a nit-picky line-editor.

the stuff i listed above are all double-edged swords. i can get really stubborn about some sci-fi concept making no damn sense, and i'll admit right now that i get ornery about stuff like that. often, i may not have anything super helpful to say; i'm not an expert at this revision stuff, so sometimes all i may say is, "something about this seems off. change it. somehow." the main thing i should warn of; i am a huge flake. since being a beta makes me accountable to you, i'll try my best not to drift off the face of the internet like i do with my own stories, but be prepared if i disappear for weeks at a time. college has this way of being feast-or-famine in terms of workload.

i like smart stories that rely a lot on interaction to drive the plot. i'd like to help someone who's at about the same place in terms of writing ability; after all, critique and revision is equally helpful to both parties. i'm perfectly happy to help somebody who's just getting started, too, but my preference is for writers who've seen a few things.

i have written everything from gruesome murder to gratuitous porn and a lot of things in between. i give no damns. if the story is blatantly not even worth reading, then don't expect me to beta it, but if you've put effort into it, i will return that effort in kind.
