I am a very critical and tough beta-reader. I look for structure, grammar, and above all else, keeping Canon Characters IN character. I'm even more critical of Original Characters inserted into pre-exsisting stories, although I have seen instances where OC's are acceptable on a third-person perspective (IE, through the reader's eyes). Those seeking to employ my services will expect an in-depth analysis of their story but will also be faulted for absurd behavior in writing styles, descriptions, and character development. I do not appreciate "sterotyping" characters, for example, having Ayeka and Ryoko from the Japanese animation show Tenchi Muyo! constantly at each other's throats as a means for conflict and story. Unless their original designs have them arguing 24/7, you should not generalize as such.

As a beta-reader, I will tell the original author how good or bad their story might be. Those for whom I beta-read must be open to criticism and I will not tolerate someone who takes offense to even the smallest change I give. These, or course, will be my opinions and you are free to discuss them at length with me if you feel a certain way is better or if you're unsure as the course of my suggestive actions.

As a final note, I WILL discontinue beta-reading a story if I feel no attempt to progress is being made on the author's part, if the author constantly ignores my opinions and advice, or if the story just plain sucks.

I pride myself on my attention to detail and enjoy writing complex, in-depth descriptions of objedcts, environments and action sequences. The other thing I think I excel in is keeping Canon Characters "In" character, rather, having them stay true (to an extent) to their original design. Sometimes odd or off-base emotions are needed to enhance or continue a story, but they generally maintain the same attitude and demeanor as they did in the original work.

Dialogue. I have difficulties stringing together conversations that last more than a couple paragraphs and I tend to worry and obsess that I am being too lenient on emotion and the actual feel for the story when writing interaction between characters.

My only preference is actual stories over poetry. The longer the story the usually the better because it shows to me that the author is taking time to work around the original work and add intuitive and interesting ideas of his own.

Poetry and extremely short stories. Unless it is something innovative, small stories only a few hudnred characters long show a complete lack of writing ability in the author and I generally dismiss and criticize them for being such.

On another note, CROSS-OVERS. When done right they can bring together two worlds that would be interesting to see interact, however, I have seen few crossovers done properly and are usually just a poor excuse to see two characters battle or fall in love. That makes a poor story and will be looked down upon.
