Beta Description
Beta Bio: general description as a beta reader
I like to read, and am considering a career as an editor. I figure that this place would be a good place to try that out.

My category preferences are broad for two reasons. First, I like to try new things, and good ideas can come from anywhere. Second, while I do have specific categories that I visit more frequently than others and have a greater understanding of the background in those specific areas, I try to be non-discriminatory in what I review. In the event that I'm not enjoying your story because I can't get into the premise or genre, I'll gently recommend you find a different beta-reader, one who'll appreciate what you're trying to do more. I look for certain themes in stories and avoid others. Just because I don't want to beta-read for you doesn't automatically mean your writing is bad.

I expect those who I beta-read for to have more than a basic grasp of the English language. If not, then I'll be glad to give you tips on spelling and grammar, so long as you don't make the same errors again too often.

These are the foundations I've set out at the beginning. I have no doubt that they will change or be modified with time.

My Strengths: beta, writing, or reading strengths
First off, I can only tell you about what I think would work (and, consequentially, what doesn’t). I’m talking plot points, character decisions, background information, and any other ideas you may have. I'll interpret how you describe something, and tell you if it's getting the desired effect out of me. I'm also a personal fan of sub-creation - putting such detail into describing the settings that it almost seems real. I warn you of this because I may push you into putting more description into your writing. That's just how I am. Ultimately, the final decision will up to you.

I’ll check for grammar and spelling errors, as they are the fundamental tenets of writing in any language. However, I will allow you to bend the rules in writing on occasion, if I believe that doing so adds to the aesthetic quality of a piece.

I was more inclined toward the creative writing end of the English spectrum in high school. Plots and hidden meanings really interest me. I will try to guess what you have planned next.

My Weaknesses: beta, writing, or reading weaknesses
I'm new at this, and I can only communicate to you through writing and without the benefit of speaking in person. I don't believe myself to be harsh, but I can be critical. If I don't see something working (and this has got to be /really/ bad plot hole) or have seen it before, I won't mince words telling you. I used to nit-pick (still do sometimes), but I've been working on limiting that. Delayed responses are how I do this. Don't worry if I don't get back to you until late - it probably just means that I'm rethinking what I was going to say.
Preferred: types of stories I prefer over others
Sci fi and fantasy stories are my favorite genres, but just about any will do. There are genres that I haven't read a lot on, but I still have quite the diverse experience.

Stories that question and invent are always better than when someone paints by the numbers. Other than that, try and be creative. Draw from real life - that's always different from person to person.

Lastly, try to make a story that means something, especially to you. I like it when characters realize a life lesson at the end, instead of just existing to further the plot.

Would Rather Not: I do not beta for these stories
Personally, I'm not that fond of straight-romance stories. It can exist as a secondary or tertiary plot point, but not beyond that. Otherwise, in my opinion, it'll distract from the real message of the story. I also want stories that say something, not a cop-off some other successful idea. If you are basing your story off another one, then at least try to re-invent it. I don't want any self-inserts that are just you enacting an already existing story (a serious problem in many sections of the games category).
