To my own distress, I've come across quite a lot of sloppy fanfic since I began to read it. I began to write myself, then beta in an effort to contribute to the existence of well-written, realistic fanfic. (I often wonder whether some writers actually like what they've written themselves... ) I've learned from experience that it is often difficult to see your own mistakes - especially when you're really into your story. I make mistakes, too. However, I'm often really good at catching those in the work of my fellows. I've already beta read a lot of fanfic in the last eight (!) years; I've never seen a writer unhappy after I beta read for them - not that I know of. br /

As a beta reader, I try to balance between being thorough and gentle. If I've been sent a chapter that is exceptionally atrocious, find that I'm unable to work on a piece without being harsh, fume while I read... I'll return the story or chapter to the author, without hesitation, and I will include the reasons why I feel I can't do the job. I'm not a spell check. Having a beta reader doesn't mean you, yourself, don't have to write to the best of your abilities prior to sending it anymore... Believe me, I'll /

I do try to make the writers see where and why this and that is not correct or could be better in my personal opinion. I tend to highlight mistakes in certain colors to enable them to see what sort of mistake they have made: grammar, spelling... My efforts go to helping the writers as a whole, help them learn - rather than fix a story or chapter only. Therefore, I manage to have great patience.
