When serving as a beta-reader, I try to share my knowledge and experience so the writer can learn from it and improve their future works. I may not work for very long with writers who are lazy and refuse to try to improve on issues that have been pointed out multiple times before. br /

*I use the FanFiction DocX exchange system to transfer documents. Due to privacy considerations, e-mail isn't an option. br /

*I'll take care of little spelling and punctuation issues directly without commenting. I'll comment on any that appear to be typical, repeated issues so you, the writer, can correct them yourself in the future. I usually put this in brackets so you can see them and edit out as you do your story clean up. Similarly, with minor grammar issues, I make those corrections without commenting, too. I generally don't touch dialogue grammar, particularly when using a western dialect, but I'll make a comment in brackets if I have an alternate suggestion. Minor word rearrangement is typically done without comment, too. Significant grammar issues or points where I'm not sure of the intent will be noted. I'll usually put that in brackets and show my suggested fix. I'll explain anything significant as well as I can. br /

*Possible story-related issues usually get comments in brackets, but I don't make changes to such issues since it's your story as a writer. You'll be able to consider my point and either agree and make changes or say I'm nuts as applicable. I'll work on uniform formatting so it looks consistent and (hopefully) visually appealing. br /

*Finally, please note that beta-reading is not a paid editing service; you'll receive what I hope is an improved, but not complete, work. When your story comes back to you, you, the writer, will most likely have some work to do, taking care of any comments and editing out any brackets that identify issues I've noted. br /

*Last but not least, due to my schedule, my time for beta-reading work is very limited. Please don't be offended if I have to /

I do well with grammar and punctuation, and am decent with spelling (see My Weaknesses), but my main strength is looking at the story as a whole. Does it make sense? Are there contradictions or plot holes that need to be addressed? Do characters stay in fandom character or does it violate fandom canon? For these reasons, it's rare for me to work outside of fandoms with which I am familiar.

My spelling isn't great; I keep a dictionary/thesaurus website open when I'm writing and use the spell checker in my word processing program. I expect writers requesting beta-reading services to, at minimum, run their story through a spell checker. These don't catch everything (like gate versus gait), but they help and cut down on the effort needed on both our parts.

Due to personal time constraints, I generally prefer working with shorter stories of less than 10,000 words.

I'm generally not into bloody horror in what used to be called slasher fiction or into modern slash fiction. Stories that violate FanFiction's Terms & Conditions won't be considered or beta-read either.
