I would say as a beta-reader I'm looking overall for details, descriptions and flow. My interest is more in the actual story and plot rather than the technical aspects (but I notice major mechanical issues). To me, a story should make the reader want to to go on, be it until the end of the chapter or series.

Expectation wise, I just expect a solid effort and a willingness to take honest, helpful criticism. I don't beta to belittle or drag down a writer or story, so rest assured any critique will be constructive.

Overall, I would say that I'm a better beta-candidate for a writer who had a good understanding of the mechanics of writing, but may need an honest opinion about a physical story, plot or idea.

I feel that I'm good at projecting a certain feeling or aura to a story, usually via my choice of descriptions and language choice.

2. Characters

Assuming I'm familiar with the characters, I have a good sense of what a character would say/be like in a variety of situations.

3. Transitions

Getting from sad scene A to happy scene B can be a problem, but I think I can help in that regard.
