As a beta-reader I tend to steer clear of anything plot-related unless it is severely impeding the clarity of the story. I check for spelling and grammar mistakes (of course) as well as general stylistic issues. As an American-English speaker I try to focus on using words that an American character and American audience would readily understand. I have always appreciated people writing with an ear (or eye in this case) for the vernacular when dealing with their characters. I also look for things that may take away from the story like geographical errors, mathematical errors and general consistency issues.

My strengths are finding spelling and grammar errors, inconsistencies in story line and language.

My weaknesses are in dealing with any story written for characters who speak a different language and even more specifically, non-American style English.

I prefer to beta stories that have characters I am familiar with.

I prefer to not beta any story dealing primarily with smut-related themes or song/poem/vignette style stories.
